Hillary Clinton has been aiming for more millennial votes during her campaign.
One factor that is stopping Clinton from being the leading lady in this election is that she lacks the majority of the millennial votes. While Bernie Sanders was still in the race, he held that majority over Clinton. In July, Sanders did endorse Clinton, which many hoped would give her the cutting edge to win this election, but many millennials have moved to third-party candidates.
During this month, Clinton sent two liberal favorites- Sanders and Elizabeth Warren- out to college campuses, including Kent State, to campaign for her. According to the The Atlantic, 1/3 of voters under the age of 30 have decided to vote for the Libertarian nominee, Gary Johnson, or the Green Party’s nominee, Jill Stein, in this upcoming election in November.
In the 2012 election, an advantage that President Obama had was his rapport with the millennial voter. He had 60 percent of the millennial votes. This does not mean that Clinton is not a fan-favorite of many millennials though. Clinton is well-liked among millennial voters at Kent State! The College Democrats have endorsed her as well as there is a Facebook group for Hillary Supporters.
What does Clinton need to do to win over the rest of the millennials?
Personally, I’ve wondered this for a while, so I Googled that exact statement.
“Become Bernie” is what popped into my head, but on my screen an interesting Politco article came up.
“You’re not going to spend your time on millennials who are not going to come out to vote at least in the ground game going into November,” Clinton’s former chief operating officer, Beth Lester Sidhu, said, “in the same way a brand wouldn’t spend all of its time and resources going after someone who is only going to maybe try their product one out of five times.”
This article was written before the Democratic National Conference, but it still got me thinking, does she not think there is anything Clinton can do to win over our generation?
We would love to know what our generation thinks about this topic! Please tweet @HCKentState with your thoughts on Hillary with the hashtag: #Imwithher!
