Kent in the fall is absolutely beautiful and there’s no denying that. The changing leaves, the constant aroma of pumpkin spice in the air, and the cool atmosphere have always made fall my—as well as many others’—favorite season. But here in Northeast Ohio, it can be pretty difficult to plan your outfits around the weather, considering how varied it can be. One day, it’s cloudy and 57 degrees—the perfect weather to break out your favorite snuggly sweater, topped off with a beanie and a pumpkin spice latte in hand. The next day, it could be 80 degrees and humid, making you dig for those shorts you’ve had stowed away since August. If you’re a shoe-lover like me, the weather can totally dictate the style of shoe I’m going to spend money on for the season. Here are the top five styles you’ll find yourself needing this autumn.

Nice flats

I know, I know, you’ll need these for every other season of the year. Whether it be for your internship, going to class, trying to impress during a job interview or just your typical work day, these shoes are crucial to have in your wardrobe. With the change of the season, the standard style of a pair of flats gets a chic and sophisticated update as shown below.

Zara, $59.90

ASOS, $63.00

ASOS, $57.00

Booties

These are so important in the fall because of how versatile they are. While they have become a closet staple, they look the best to me when worn with skinny jeans and a blanket scarf. These shoes are my favorite for the fall because they look just as good going to work, as they do going to class and even going out to the bars and clubs at night.

H&M, $49.99

Zara, $49.90

ASOS, $68.00

Slip-ons

Somehow, I always find myself much busier in the fall than any other time of year, and these shoes are my go-to. Whether you’re running errands around town all day, running late or just on the go, these shoes are the perfect, comfy and cute solution. Plus, they look great dressed down for class and spiced up for events.

Zara, $49.90

Target, $24.99

ASOS, $30.00

Rain boots

Northeast Ohio in the fall means rain, rain, and more rain because this season is the precursor to the snowy winter we have to look forward to come December. I never imagined how much I would need these when I moved to Kent freshman year, but after a couple of weeks of water-soaked shoes, I can honestly say they were one of my best decisions I made that semester. I know the first brand that typically comes to mind for rain boots is Hunter, but here are some options that won’t break the bank.

Target, $34.99

ASOS, $31.00

Kohl’s, $64.99

Snow boots

Being from Texas, I never understood how crazy the winters could get in the northern states. So coming to Ohio my freshman year, I was in shock when I had to put aside my pride and actually buy a pair in early November. While I admit how much I disliked having to get them in the first place, I can’t deny how many times they have come in handy. Plus, they have much cuter styles now than when I first bought mine almost three years ago!

Zappos, $95.00

Target, $49.99

Macy’s, $79.00
