Sweatpants are always a go-to on a busy school day. Comfort is cool! However, studies from The Wall Street Journal have shown that the phrase “dress for success” actually has some credibility to it. Statistics don’t lie!

Dressing nice actually leads to others perceiving you in a positive way, as well as feeling more confident in yourself, and who doesn’t wanna feel confident? Dressing up leads to success in all forms. You look good, so you feel good.

Dr. Audrey Tang, psychologist and member of the British Psychological Society talks about the actual benefits of dressing nice. “What I love about people saying, ‘You know what, I’m choosing to dress up just to feel good,’ is that that’s a little win, and that’s brilliant,” Tang said. “Even just sitting up standing up straight, standing tall and putting on something that you love that makes you feel good – that’s going to have an effect on our brains,” confirms Tang. The trick is simply offering our brains something novel – that way, “the brain gets quite excited”.

With college back in session and classes in full swing, maybe you don’t know what to wear. It can be intimidating dressing up, especially at Kent State seeing as it is the second-best fashion school in the nation as of 2021. Some people may even think they don’t have time to think about a cute outfit when they’ve got a million assignments due, but who says you can’t do both? I promise you, you can.

There’s no rulebook on how to dress because fashion is subjective, it’s whatever you want it to be. However, if you really are stumped, there are always popular trends to follow. Popular trends right now include academia, y2k and hot goth. If these aren’t quite your thing, that’s okay too. There are endless amounts of fashion trends to fit your personality. Every month there is something new, a trend or a viral TikTok that will give you some fashion inspo!

All of these trends do not require you to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe; get creative with it! Whether it’s an old blazer or leather jacket you thought you’d never wear again, or a new hot pink graphic tee you don’t know how to style, the options are endless. There is a big misconception that you have to have a lot of money to dress nicely, but this is not true. Thrift stores are a great alternative to retail stores, and you’re more likely to find more unique pieces thrifting. Not to mention, it’s sustainable!

It’s easy to just roll out of bed and get to class, but what’s the fun in that? If you’re ever low on self-esteem it’s a good idea to wake up early and pick a fun outfit for your long day ahead. It’s easy to be down on yourself when you don’t look your best. Dress as your authentic self, and most importantly just have fun with it. Dress for YOUR success!
