With fall in full swing, there’s no better time than now to add some fresh new additions to your closet. Better yet, purchasing classic and interchangeable basics allows for more freedom when creating outfits (and less overspending). By investing in a capsule wardrobe, you can get the look you’re going for with pieces that can follow you into the next season. Maximize your outfit choices and minimize the new pieces you buy with the help of this article.

Cable knit sweater

I know a lot of us have been having a Rory Gilmore fall. There’s something about a cable knit sweater that is both so classic and versatile- it automatically makes you look as if you’ve spent the whole day at a coffee shop, thrifting or taking a walk through the leaves. Investing in a quality cable knit sweater could be the easiest way to upgrade your wardrobe this fall simply because sweaters have so many possibilities when crafting a fit. Layered with a collared shirt, tucked into some jeans or worn with a plaid skirt and tights- the options are as endless as these sweaters are warm.

To get your own cable knit sweater, I recommend first visiting your local thrift store to check out their selection. Depop is your friend as well- I’ve found some Irish knit cable sweaters made of 100% wool for a fraction of the cost. If you’re on a time crunch, I recommend this cable knit sweater from Brandy Melville. It’s oversized, cozy and still made of wool that will last you through the season.

brushed knit scarf

Soft, mohair brushed knit scarves are the way to go during fall. I personally love when they boast bright pastel colors that can make any neutral fall fit playful and fresh. I’ve been on the hunt for an affordable version of this scarf ever since I discovered the Acne Studio’s version of a plaid pastel knit scarf for $200 dollars. If you’re looking for one that meets your price point, I recommend checking out Urban Outfitter’s Plaid Scarf for $35. Throw it on over a leather blazer or puffer jacket!

Neutral fall-friendly shoes

When it comes to shoes, I prefer for my shoes to be neutral and comfortable. This ensures that they will fit right into your new fall capsule wardrobe; you want shoes that you’ll be reaching for all season long. Of course there are a ton of popular and trendy shoe choices right now- I instantly think of mini Uggs, Doc Martens and Birkenstock clogs. If you want something that is as equally trendy as it is classic, I recommend a pair of neutral New Balances. They make you feel like you’re walking on clouds even when you’re walking uphill on campus. Matching them to your fits will be the least of your concerns, they go with everything!

classic denim jeans

My favorite thing about denim jeans is that once you find your perfect jean, you’re set for years. It all comes down to finding the color, fit and cut that you like. If you’re looking for a jean that looks like you could’ve thrifted it, I recommend checking out Levi’s. These jeans, both old and new, last forever and compliment any look with their classic casual appeal. You can tuck your sweater into them, pair it with a turtleneck or even a college hoodie for an autumnal preppy look. I personally love Levi’s 501 and 512s because they are super high waisted and a straight leg that universally complements any look.

accessories that make the fit

When you’re looking to add some forever-pieces to your wardrobe, sometimes accessories are the best place to start. They can turn some of your preexisting outfits into entirely new pieces if you know exactly what to buy. This fall, I think we’ll see a surge in fluffy earmuffs, long scarves, cable knit crew socks, crochet mittens and of course gold jewelry. This part of the capsule wardrobe is so specific to the individual, so I urge you to have fun with your choices and pick out pieces that truly make you happy!
