The Basics You Need in Your Closet, Every Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

I like to think of myself as an online shopping connoisseur, and recently I noticed how often I wear and incorporate a core set of clothing essentials. Below I have eight items that I wear almost every day with my other patterned and colorful pieces. I like to think of it as a core closet, and I think everyone needs their own core closet.

Platform Sneakers

I just recently bought myself a black pair of platform converse, and let me say they are life-changing. Those are by far my favorite option but any pair of platform white or black sneaks will work with almost everything.

The Perfect Black Skinny Jean

Let’s be real… if you aren’t rocking this essential like every other day, you need to get on board. I have multiple pairs of black skinny jeans for multiple occasions. You can dress them up or dress them down depending on the time of day. It’s up to you!

Neutral Blazer

Yet again, this is an essential piece  I just bought for myself and I swear I can’t seem to take it off. I got mine from Princess Polly and I’m in love. I’d recommend going one size up whatever blazer you get so it’s slightly oversized. Plus try and find one that has a tie on it like the one I pictured, that way you can wear it tied up and synch your waist or you can wear it open and loose.

Romantic Tops

These kinds of tops are especially trendy right now, but they’re still a classic in my eyes. If you get a simple color one or a mesh one like the pictures, you can wear it with any bottoms and elevate your whole look in seconds. They’re a classic and a bonus is they are good for an interview or internship.

Fitted Straight-Across Dress

This dress is a necessity. You can layer it in the winter and pair it with cute patterned tights and a cropped boot. Or, you can head out for a summer night with the dress, a light cardigan, and a sneaker. This is perfect for catering to certain occasions and seasons.

Turtlenecks on turtlenecks

I’m obsessed with fitted turtlenecks. They look so flattering on their own with jeans or a skirt or you can layer them under dresses, t-shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, anything! They’re so perfect to spice up your daily look, plus if it’s chilly out that day it’ll keep you warm.

White Booties

I would say get either black or white booties, but I recently got these ones I pictured from Dolls Kill, and they make every basic outfit I used to wear with black booties look 10x cuter. I swear by the concept of white booties over black ones! Have some fun with textures too, mine are corduroy, but you could get PVC, leather, suede, etc. You can wear them with any outfit to make it look more elevated.

Black Leather Shoulder Bag

This is just a classic addition to your outfit. I thrifted the one I have, but you can find them at almost any store. I like to add a little silk scarf onto mine, you can switch it up and change the scarf to match your outfit to look like you really have your life together.

I hope you take some styling advice from my closet essentials and either find them in your own closet or get some fresh basics!

In addition to serving as a HerCampus writer for the Kent State Chapter I work for Red Bull, and I'm the Apparel Chairwoman for my sorority Phi Mu. I decided to write for HerCampus thanks to my background in attending an all girls high school; it was there where my passion for the female empowerment movement first began. I account that institution and those girls to the woman that I am today. My interests of topic might range from fashion to mental health issues, but the overarching theme is always to have women help other women.
