The Return of “The Walking Dead”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kean chapter.

On Feb. 9, 2014 “The Walking Dead” striked back with the midseason premiere. Before the midseason break we were left off with the prison being destroyed, which left Rick and his group to no longer have a place to stay. Sadly, this meant that Rick and his group were separated. Now they each have to find one another while staying alive, which means no turning back.

In the opening of the midseason premiere we see Michonne lingering outside the walls of the prison. While walking Michonne sees Hershel’s head, the only remain that was left alive, and immediately stabs it in the forehead with her katana. Michonne did her old routine, which was taking walkers and cutting their arms and lower jaw off, but also attaching rope to them to use as a guard, while walking through a hoard of zombies.

We then see Carl and Rick walking down a long road, but Rick was limping far behind Carl. They approached a former restaurant called, Joe and Joe Jr’s BBQ shack, where Rick decides to go in and check for walkers. Rick ordered his son to stay outside, but his son refuses. Inside they find a walker who was trapped behind a large pile of furniture. Beside the furniture read a note “Please do what I couldn’t -Joe Jr.” Without hesitation Rick takes the axe and strikes the walker in the head, but fails to kill it. Carl pulls out his gun and shoots the walker in the head, which in fact kills it. Rick scolds Carl for wasting bullets. They then begin to survey the restaurant for any food and supplies they need.

We then see Michonne still walking through the forest with her accompanied pet walkers. She discovers foot prints that may belong to Rick and Carl, but she passes them instead of seeing where they may lead to.

Rick and Carl enter an abandoned home and instead of taking caution, Carl bangs on the walls and doors screaming for walkers. Rick yells at him telling him to stop. Carl tries to prove a point that his gun could destroy any walker, but tries to tell Rick he is grown up and can take care of himself. Carl goes upstairs and pulls a cord from the TV, which he uses to secure the front door. Rick pushes a couch in front of the door for security purposes. Rick leaves the room and enters a bathroom, where he examines the injuries he received from the Governor.

The next morning Carl wakes up before Rick and decides to sneak out from the back door, because he heard walkers banging on the front door. He leads them away from the door, but falls to the ground when a third walker approaches him. Just before the walkers can bite him, he shoots them all down.

We still see Michonne walking through the hoard of zombies, when she sees a walker who looks closely identical to her.

Carl returns to the house to talk to his unresponsive father. He exclaims “I don’t need you anymore” and “I’d be fine if you died.”

Carl decides to leave again and enter a new home. He goes through the cupboards and finds a large tub of chocolate pudding stashed on the very top. He grabs it and goes upstairs, where he encounters a walker. He runs out of bullets, but manages to trap the walker in a bedroom. On the door he writes in chalk “Walker inside, got my shoe, didn’t get me.” He then sits perched on the roof eating his chocolate pudding, where we see the walker in the window behind him clawing through the window to get him.

Michonne becomes terrified of her twin walker and kills it. She then goes on a rampage killing every walker insight with her katana. She leaves the forest and walks along the road, where she finds the footprints. This time she actually decides to follow them.

At night Carl wakes up to hearing his father moan. Carl ends up backing away from his father, holding a gun straight out thinking his own father ended up turning into a walker. Rick tumbles off the couch and grasps tightly onto his son’s leg. Carl is unable to shoot his father and immediately drops the gun, but then we hear his father telling him “stay safe.” Finally, Carl admits to his father that he’s scared.

We see Michonne enter the same BBQ shack and finding the same note as Rick and Carl. Rick tells Carl it was a bad idea leaving the house, but admits that his son is now a man. He was also proud of his son for going out and finding more food.

Michonne approaches a house, where she finds Rick and Carl inside. As soon as she sees them she begins to cry and knocks on the door. Rick looks outside and says, “It’s for you” to his son.

As we can see we have a very emotional opening to the continuation of season 4. This Sunday’s episode will now feature everyone’s favorite character, Daryl. Hopefully everyone will find their way to each other, because this is now focused on hope and survival of the fittest. We must remember to never look back.

To see more from “The Walking Dead”, tune into AMC on Sunday’s at 9 pm.
