Helpful Methods for Treating Psoriasis

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kean chapter.

Remember when you were a child playing outside, and your parents would say, “Don’t touch that bush. It’s poison ivy, and you will get a painful rash!”?

Well imagine having an intense rash that you have no control over. Then, after its first appearance, it continues to come back more then twice a month!

The rash that I am referring to is Psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a skin disease that is passed on genetically and usually strikes women in their young twenties. Three months after I turned 24 years old I had my first encounter with Psoriasis.

One day, in the beginning of July, I felt this terrible burning sensation on my chest. It felt like a bee sting. After about three days of going through this pain, naturally I realized that I needed to do something to cope with this pain. And, I had to do it quickly!

I used four different methods that made my skin disease seem almost non-existent.

The first item I used was an Aveeno Oatmeal and Shea cream. The Aveeno cream is made with natural ingredients, which helped in soothing the rash. It also disguised the redness, decreased the amount of scaring and stops the itching on the rash.

The second step I followed to ease the pain involved taking a wash cloth, soaking it in cold water and placing it on top of the affected area. Not only does this help with the burning, but it also reduces the swelling of the rash.

The third step I took towards treatment was to use a lightly scented soap. Strong perfume soaps tend to increase the possibility of a dangerous infection and that is the last thing you need!

Some of the best mild soaps to use during Psoriasis are the regular scented Jergens and Dial. I use both of these soaps on a normal basis and they keep my skin extremely moisturized, which is important towards dealing with this rash problem.

The final step I took was drinking a lot of water. Water is not only essential to drink daily, so you can receive the correct amount of once based on your body weight, but it helps to keep all of your skin healthy, especially from irritations.

These methods are not the only ways to help with Psoriasis. There are many more. Just keep in mind that you need to choose one that is comfortable, easily accessible, and best for your condition.

I received my Associate's degree in Liberal Arts Journalism at Middlesex County College. I have a variety of Journalism experience. I was in charge of children's newsletter at a summer camp program. I worked on a news report at MCC about a program called "Give Kids a Smile" and this program provided free dental care to children. I am great at digital photography, interviewing, and networking. I also wrote for two school newspapers. The first was "Quo Vadis" for Middlesex County College. I am currently a second time writer for "The Tower" newspaper at Kean.
