Baruti Libre: founder of Libre Brand Clothing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kean chapter.

What do you get when you mix the persona of a young Common, with the swagger ofAsap Rocky. Every now and then, there are a couple of male college students enlightened by the forefathers of human equality. What better way is there to teach African-American males about their strong roots, then run a clothing line that continues and celebrates African-American culture! Baruti Libre’s name is being printed across stores in New Jersey and New York! What does Baruti have to fling at the hater’s?

“Nothing, peoples hatred motivates me to achieve much more.” Baruti states.

Baruti already mastered the undergrad game and scored his Bachelors in Comparative Politics, while still maintaining Magna Cum Laude Honors! Fashion is not Barauti’s only passion, he loves the art of public speaking. Malcom X, Martin Luther King, Les Brown and Zig Ziglar are all important icons that stimulated Baruti’s mind to learn outside the norm. Why go into public speaking?

“The ability to articulate and elucidate my views and information to people in creative ways for people to understand, apprehend and grasp.” Baruti simply responded.

Baruti Libre was inspired to get into fashion design in the late 90’s. Hip Hop culture, is another main contributor to Baruti’s intense interest in fashion. Who would of known that Mark Ecko and Daymond John of FUBU would be people that Baruti pays his homage too!

Libre Brand, wich is Baruti’s clothing line is what’s up and coming right now. All over Instagram models are posing in jackets and beanies with Baruti’s last name on it. The Afrocentric look is not only a fad, but an intellectual resemblance of who Baruti is as a person.

I was confused how Baruti could be so young, and yet swing a business together, while still living life.

“Persistence, tenacity, organization, leadership, vision, optimism, innovation, charisma and a lack of sensitivity.” Baruti said.

It takes a lot of determination and organization to start something from nothing. Having faith will allow a business to grow like a mustard seed. The fashion industry as a whole could be a pretty complex place like an unknown world. This industry isn’t for people who love “me time”. A bright, quirky and humble personality will always draw people towards your aura. Be different! Be You! Remember those that are labeled as “odd balls” usually make it.

Baruti has networked with so many different types of people just from being Baruti Libre. He is well aware that he can’t rely on anyone to “put him on”, but is a one man show. Self- reliance, and faith in his own ability, is what’s leading Baruti to the top!
