It IS Easy Being Green!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

You see it everywhere: “Go green!”, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!” Sustainability is not just a fad, it’s on its way to becoming a true revolution. It’s because being “green” doesn’t mean you have to change everything about your lifestyle anymore; all it takes is a few modifications… (Don’t worry, no one i
s asking you to become vegan or stop showering!)

• JMU makes it so easy for us to recycle. There is a recycling bin next to every trash can, and recycling facilities in every dorm. Start making it a habit to drop your bottles and cans in. Take advantage of what our school gives us!

Don’t forget that you can recycle your old clothes too! Oftentimes, different clubs around campus will run winter coat, jeans or sneaker drives for charity. And don’t forget about trusty old Goodwill. You can help out the community and maybe find a few sweet deals while you’re there!

• Another way JMU is making headway in the field of sustainability is by using locally grown foods in dining halls and reusable carry-out containers. Follow our school’s lead by using a BPA free water bottle or coffee mug, and check out the farmers’ market on the Warren patio or downtown.

Use environmentally friendly makeup! Look for brands that use natural ingredients and minimize packaging. This doesn’t have to break the bank though; brands like Physician’s Formula, Ecotools, and Burt’s Bees can all be found in drug stores at an affordable price!

• For all of you who have become addicted to Pinterest, you know how fun DIY is! By taking advantage of normal household items, you are also being more environmentally friendly. Use glitter and ribbon to transform old soup cans into beautiful pencil holders, cut up old T-shirts to create edgy tank tops or if you’re up to a little sewing you can make tote bags and pillows!
