The College Girl’s Guide to Staying Fit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Are you looking to get in shape? Want that body you’ve been thinking about every time you look in the mirror? Girls, if you’re anything like me, you want it, but you’re usually too busy or too lazy to work for it. Starting a new workout routine can be an overwhelming thing if you don’t have the right mindset. If you put together a plan of certain days you want to work out, that will encourage you to go to the gym. I devised a list of 6 ways to get started on a workout routine and obtain (and retain!) the body you’ve always wanted.

1. Just Do IT!
Okay, I know what you’re thinking; it’s easier said then done. People who gained success in the area of physical fitness are no different than you. They’ve just taken the first step and kept at it. It all comes down to your will power. Make a plan and go for it! I know how you feel. Coming from me, the hardest part about working out is actually starting! But trust me, even a short workout once or twice a week will really turn your world around! You’ll look and feel better instantly – besides the sore legs!

2. Develop a “Can-Do” Mindset
I believe your mindset has a lot to do with whether or not you are successful. I heard people say that they want to get fit, but they are not willing to work out. When you think thoughts that contradict your goals, you are not only going to have a bad workout, but will you also be discouraged and no longer have motivation. Keep an open mind!

3. Stick with it!
Naturally, we want to see results overnight. When working out, our inspiration comes from seeing results. When we see results we like, we work harder. However, if we don’t see results when we want them, we start to make excuses of why we should take a break for a little while. Then, a while becomes even longer, and before we know it, we’ve given up on our goal of getting in shape. Instead of making excuses and getting discouraged, keep up with your schedule. Stay motivated and you will see the results you want to see.

4. Enroll in Classes
If you’re like me, you want to get in shape, without actually feeling like you’re working out. My solution? Take classes! My favorites are Pilates, Yoga and Kickboxing! All of these classes are offered at UREC throughout the day. Pilates is core-strengthening exercises that train your body using slow, guided movements. Yoga is similar to Pilates, but is more based toward flexibility and holding positions for a period of time to work all parts of your body. Kickboxing on the other hand is a fast-paced workout that burns calories and sculpts your muscles, without getting boring or repetitive.

These classes are perfect if you’re not the running type. For me, running on the treadmill is worse then studying for an exam! These classes are easily accessible and will make you excited to sign up for the next one.

5. Change it up
When you get tired with your workout, switch it up. Trying different levels of intensity, duration, frequency or activity will allow you to exercise all of your muscles. If you follow these simple rules, you will feel better both mentally and physically. Stick to these steps and you will have the body you always wanted!

6. Make it a Routine!
Schedule your workouts like you would schedule your class. Don’t skip! Trust me, the more you plan for it, the less you will postpone it.
