Are You Warm, Cool, or Neutral?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Did you know that your skin tone has undertones that affect your overall glow? You might have realized that some people have a more golden glow, while others have a softer glow. Every person has a skin tone that either favors a “warmer” or “cooler” undertone (unless you’re lucky enough to get the best of both worlds by being neutral!). Knowing your undertone is a great way of improving your choices with clothing, hair color, make-up, and jewelry. Enhancing your undertone will make you look fresh and naturally radiant.

Okay, so how do I figure out my undertone?

There are a few tests that can help you determine what undertone you favor most:

The Vein Test: In natural sunlight, expose your wrist and check out your veins. If the veins appear bluer, then you are cool toned. If they seem greener, then you are warm toned.

The Clothing Test: Another great way to tell is to try on different colored clothing. Blacks and true white tend to look better on cooler-toned people, while off-white and browns are better for the warmer-toned.

The Jewelry Test: Try on some necklaces or other jewelry. Cool people look better in silver and lighter colored jewelry. Warm people tend to look better with gold jewelry.

Still Unsure? : If all of these things leave you contradicting or doubting yourself, you may be neutral. Lucky for you, you can mix and match most things and always look fabulous!

So wait… What does my skin undertone mean?

With this bit of knowledge, you can now look at the things you wear in a new light. Next time you choose a foundation or concealer, consider whether or not the product has a yellow tint (for warm toned) or pink tint (for cool toned). Based on your shirt and jewelry preferences, you can now favor the things that make your skin look fresher and healthier. Good luck!
