HC How To: What to Wear to Your Next Holiday Party

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JHU chapter.

The holiday season is here: the season of Bing Crosby on the radio, Red Rider BB guns, lots of mall trips, wishes for snow, and plenty of cheer. It’s also the season of parties, from family get-togethers to New Year’s celebrations. But as much fun as holiday parties are, deciding what to wear can be a little stressful. And who needs stress  during the holidays? Here are some quick tips on what to wear to every type of holiday extravaganza.

The Family Party: Remember when you were little and used to wear velvet dresses for holiday events? Luckily, this 90s inspired trend is back this season and perfect for a family party. It’s both cute and 100% grandparent approved. Opt for a sweet, red velvet dress to show plenty of holiday spirit while also staying stylish. Pair this dress with black tights and black flats or heels to look both festive and fashionable.

The Office Party: Even though the holiday season makes everyone feel a little freer, you shouldn’t get too crazy at a work party (regardless of that eggnog.) Go for a slightly conservative, simple LBD but liven the mood with some accessories that pop. The holidays are perfect for sparkles and bedazzled jewelry, and a black dress will really set off your gems. Grab a glittery clutch and you’re all set for your next office event!

The New Year’s Eve Party: Remember how I said the holidays are perfect for glittery accessories? Well, New Year’s Eve parties are an even better excuse to break out the bling. But instead of sticking to accessories, rock a totally sequined dress to bring in the new year. You’ll be the life of the party, and when the clock strikes twelve, you’ll ready to welcome 2013 in style.

The Friend Party: This season, it seems like everyone is ditching the mall and hitting up the nearest Salvation Army for their holiday parties with friends. Why? The beloved “ugly sweater party” of course! This is a great way to keep parties down to earth and lots of fun for all the guests. So head to your nearest Salval or Goodwill and hunt down the most garish, colorful, tacky holiday sweater you can find- the more reindeers, the better.
