Crazy Rich Asians: A Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JHU chapter.

By now, I’m pretty sure you’ve all heard of the wildly popular movie “Crazy Rich Asians,” but some of you still may not have gotten around to watching it. If you haven’t watched the movie yet, you should definitely check it out! The story follows Rachel Chu and her trip to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick Young to attend his best friend’s wedding. Even though I was laughing in the beginning, I was definitely tearing up in the end! After watching the movie myself, here are some of the things I loved about the movie:

1. Aesthetic scenes:

Ok, so I’m all about the aesthetics. The scenery is to die for honestly. Singapore is so beautiful and the decorations matched perfectly. My favorite scene has to be the wedding scene where the bride enters because it looked so magical my heart melted. Combined with everything else going on, I nearly choked on the knot in my throat.

2. Badass female characters:

Although Rachel definitely stands out as the main character, Nick’s cousin Astrid also caught my attention. Born and raised in a wealthy family, cultured, considerate, beautiful and intelligent, Astrid is every man’s ideal girl. She isn’t arrogant because of her wealth and she works hard. Astrid’s character growth by the end of the movie definitely made her even more attractive.

3. Asian Representation:

Why is the Asian-American community somewhat obsessed with the movie? Look at the cast! Every main character is Asian. This is a big step for diversity in the movie scene after all the disappointment with white leads replacing Asian roles.

4. Heart-warming moments:

I’m always weak for cute scenes and this movie has quite a few. Even though the romantic scenes between Nick and Rachel are cute, Rachel’s interactions with her mother and her best friend are truly soft. Mothers are our best cheerleaders!

5. Asian-American Culture:

As an Asian-American myself, I could truly relate to all the little details in the movie about the difficulties of living as an Asian-American. We may be Americanized, but we still retain our roots and it would be nice to have that acknowledged. The movie does a great job focusing on culture and showing what it is like to be Asian-American.
