7 Recipes That Remind Us Why We Love Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JHU chapter.

It’s that time of the year again: the air is cool and crisp, the leaves are falling, scarves and boots are making their annual reappearance and pumpkins and apples and squash are back in season. Color scheme aside, these fruits—because yes, they are technically all fruits—make for some of the most delicious fall recipes. Variations of all of these cuisines are available in restaurants around town, but for those of you particularly motivated to explore the pumpkin, squash and apple areas of your kitchen, here are seven classic, delicious recipes.

Apple Cider Donuts:

Apple picking seems to be a staple of autumn. Especially at Hopkins, it seems we have endless trips to orchards on the weekends, but even if you don’t manage to make it out to an orchard this fall, supermarket apples are perfectly acceptable for these delicious donuts. Here is a great (albeit a little time-intensive) recipe.

Squash Soup:

This is a nice variation of squash soup with apples and soju (a Korean liquor best described as a watered down version of vodka). Unfortunately, soju is alcoholic, so for those of us college students under the age of 21, water is a fine replacement for the purposes of this recipe.

Warm Apple Spiced Cider:

Back to apples, seeing as I just can’t seem to get enough of them. Apple cider is plenty good all on it’s own, but if you’re in the mood for something new and especially flavorful, then Martha Stewart’s recipe is the way to go.

Pumpkin Pie:

Pumpkin pie is the ultimate fall dessert. Though typically served at Thanksgiving, it is perfectly socially acceptable to eat pumpkin pie for breakfast, lunch and dinner all through the fall (don’t take this to mean that you can’t eat pumpkin pie during the other seasons as well!). Feel free to make this pie for friends, family, or simply for yourself; either way it’s bound to be scrumptious!

Caramel Apples

In case you hadn’t had enough of apples (which, in case you were wondering, never get old) caramel apples are another yummy fall treat. They are basically “healthy” candy. If you’re like me, and hoard Halloween candy like nobody’s business, caramel apples are a nice alternative. This recipe is actually for chocolate pretzel caramel apples, but can be altered as necessary, though I tend to think that extra chocolate is always a good idea.

Sweet Roasted Acorn Squash

I figured it would be good to include another savory option for fall, no matter how much of a sweet tooth I have. The local farmer’s markets (and regular supermarkets) have been inundated with acorn squash lately, and this is a perfect way to cook them! Roasted squash is a great simple way to satisfy your squash craving (if there is such a thing as a squash craving, which there should be). This recipe is also from Skinny Taste so it is a great option if you’re trying to avoid putting on the extra pounds that come with cold weather. These are extremely easy to prepare, and absolutely scrumptious!

Pumpkin Spice Latte

Okay, so everybody loves a classic Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks. But say you’re trying not to end up eating easy mac for the next two weeks because you have no more money (the implication being that you spent it all on Starbucks lattes), here is an equally delicious (and quick!) alternative.

Go forth and conquer (these recipes), and enjoy!
