The Science Behind Pixar at the Franklin Institute

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jefferson chapter.

Whether we like to admit it or not, most of us are still kids at heart and there are some things from our childhood that we could never grow up from. Pixar films are one of those things. Pixar dates all the way back to 1979, but it wasn`t until 1995 that they released their first full-length movie in theaters, Toy Story. Since then, there has been 16 Pixar films released including Monsters, Inc., A Bug`s Life, Finding Nemo, and Up.

Of course we all like watching these films, but have you ever thought about how they are made? There are so many fascinating steps to make the perfect animated feature. Lucky for the people of Philadelphia, the Franklin Institute is currently offering a first time look into the science side of Pixar from now until September 5th.  The Franklin Institute is known for its interactive exhibitions and the Science Behind Pixar is no exception. There will be over 40 interactive elements which allow you to explore the steps in the filmmaking process first-hand while working along side your favorite Pixar characters. There are 8 sections to the exhibition in which guests can participate, which include: Modeling, Rigging, Surfaces, Sets and Cameras, Animation, Simulation, Lighting, and Rendering.

Not only will you get to feel what it`s like to be an animator for Pixar, but you will develop a greater appreciation for all of the hard work that goes into making the films that we know and love.
