My Newfound Relationship with Social Media

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jefferson chapter.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent way too much time carelessly tapping through people’s stories on Instagram. I’m guilty of it but then I thought to myself what the point is of tapping through if I’m literally not paying attention? To clear the stories from the top for satisfaction? Seems ridiculous. How much time do we waste doing this? Probably a concerning amount.

Since I have time during this quarantine, I’ve really been taking the time to see what people have to say, and I’m not disappointed. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching people’s stories during quarantine. I’ve seen positive quotes, cookies that they’ve baked, activities to stay busy, yoga flows, and so much more. After realizing how much I was actually missing out on good content that the people I follow are posting, I decided to reshape my relationship with social media. I unfollowed people that were negative or that I didn’t really know and followed some really cool accounts of people that will encourage me to stay positive and motivated during this time. I actually pay attention to what people have to say or what they’re doing and let me tell you, I’ve swiped up on an embarrassing amount of people. Let’s say someone posted a story of their really cute dog that genuinely made me smile, instead of tapping past I would swipe up to tell that it put a smile on my face. Just like how it made me a little happy, it’ll probably make the person on the receiving end feel a little happy, too. It doesn’t even matter if I don’t know the person well… what’s the point of having social media without the interaction? And what I’ve learned is it can make other people’s day as well as expand your acquaintances.

Quarantine is the perfect time to reshape your relationship with social media. Social media is an ongoing controversy, but you have the power to make your platform something positive and interactive, and maybe even make new friends, too.
