First Date Ideas and Stories

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jefferson chapter.

Dating in college can be really hard. Even with dating apps, it can be hard to meet people, especially people with the same intentions as you. And once you have a connection, then you have to plan a first date! First dates can be really exciting, but also nerve-racking. I reached out to a few people and asked them about their best first date experience:

“We went to mini-golf!”

“I spent 4 hours sitting inside a Starbucks talking to a girl, it felt like two minutes. It was the most invigorating conversation and felt so comfortable and easy.”

“We went to the city and visited Rockefeller center!”

“Got take-out and drove to a spot where we could see the city skyline. We just talked and got to know each other while taking in the view.”

“My best first date was also my last. It was very laid back, we just meet for pizza at a neighborhood restaurant. The best part about it was how excited I was, how easy the conversation was and how much I laughed.”

After hearing this, I thought about some things to keep in mind when planning a first date. The most important thing about first dates is that they are an opportunity to get to know someone. So, an ideal date would allow for easy conversation. While you can’t talk during a movie, following a viewing by a casual dinner can be a good way to start conversation. Food always brings people together, so talking over lunch, dinner, or even ice cream is a simple option.

Tailoring the date to the person is also super helpful. If you are both outdoorsy people, an easy hike or hanging out at a park can be a great way to get to know someone while doing an activity you like. For others, mini-golf or bowling are low cost activities that can involve a little friendly, flirty competition. Having an activity to do can take the pressure off and make the date more fun!

Even if you end up having a few bad dates, a great first date is in your future! Putting yourself out there and meeting new people is always admirable and well worth your time. Once you find the person who makes you smile and doesn’t stop making you smile, then the search will have paid off. Remember your worth and have fun out there!

I am a first-year student at Jefferson University studying Textile Materials Technology. I am originally from a suburb of Chicago, Illinois and now study in Philadelphia. At school, I am on the cross country and track teams, and I sing in the school's choir. I love going thrift shopping, reading, finding cool concerts to go to, and activism!
