5 Subreddits for Reddit Newbies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jefferson chapter.

Reddit is one of the best websites on the internet because it has something for everyone. Users post content and other users will vote either “up” or “down” on the post, dictating how popular or unpopular it becomes. Areas of interest are organized in Subreddits, such as science, news, gaming, history, funny content, etc. For people just getting into Reddit, it can be hard to navigate through the hundreds of Subreddits, so here are my 5 favorites.

1. Explain Like I’m Five

This Subreddit is great if you want to learn new things and have them clearly explained to you. Have you ever wanted to know why molecules vibrate, how touchscreens work, or why a cold feels worse in the morning than at night? Now, you can.

2. Today I Learned

This Subreddit is full of interesting facts about everything from history, pop culture, trivia, science, or anything at all. Posts on this Subreddit have to be fact based, which makes it more interesting because you know that everything you’re reading is real.

3. Fan Theories

Fan Theories is one of my favorite Subreddits because it’s full of crazy theories about TV shows, movies, and books. You can search through this Subreddit to find theories about your favorite characters. These theories can be either really fun or really creepy…

4. No Sleep

No Sleep is a Subreddit dedicated to terrifyingly scary horror stories. A rule of this Subreddit is that users must act like every story posted is real, even when it’s not, which adds to the suspense. I wouldn’t read through this Subreddit at night; you definitely wont get any sleep.

5. IAmA

This is something that Reddit is known for. Celebrities will host Q&A style sessions where fans can ask them questions and get some responses. While Barack Obama and Bill Gates have done one, a lot of your favorite celebrities probably do this too. Here is the schedule: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=amaverify@gmail.com

Some honorable mentions are AskReddit, AskScience, Not The Onion, and News.
