4 Podcasts You Should Check Out

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jefferson chapter.

From giving me something to listen to while working on projects, to providing entertainment on long commutes, and helping me ease out of bed on my lazy days, podcasts have become a recent favorite of mine! They’re also just a little more interactive than music, and just a little less distracting than TV, making for the perfect balance when it comes to multitasking while doing work. Here are a few of my favorites that I recommend!

1. No Jargon – Current Events

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to stay more on top of current events this year, and this podcast makes it easy and interesting! Each week, host Avi Green discusses politics and social issues with university professors who are top scholars in their fields. Not only are discussions informative, but they’re presented in a way that keeps it relevant for listeners and will open listeners eyes to new perspectives.

2. Adulthood Made Easy – Lifestyle

Ask almost any senior or recent grad and they’ll tell you that no matter how far into (or out of) school they are doesn’t make them an expert in life! I love this podcast specifically because it’s hosted by recent college grad Sam Zabell, who readily admits that she’s in the same boat, and brings in people with more experience to talk about real life. Topics include grocery shopping, navigating online dating, moving to a new city, making friends after college, negotiating a salary, and more. Not only is Sam humorous and down-to-earth, but her guests are the same, and they often provide links to extra resources such as books and websites (often written by the guests themselves) that focus on the topic at hand.

3.Song Exploder – Music

Ok, so this one is a little bit nerdy – but also fun if you like hearing the stories behind your favorite songs. Host Hrishikesh Hirway invites artists from Solange Knowles and Justin Hurwitz (creator of the La La Land score), to Björk and Joey Bada$$, to come on the show and break down one of their songs and all of the technical decisions that went into it bit by bit. Basically it’s Lyrics Genius but for lyrics and composition!

4. Grownups Read Things They Wrote as Kids – Comedy

This podcast is my go-to when it comes to long studio nights! Co-producers Dan Misener and his wife Jenna host live events all over Canada of people reading – quite simply – things they wrote as kids. Guests read diary entries, poems, short stories, and even bring in cards and drawings that range from funny, to awkward, to heartbreaking. So if you’re looking for something that’s charming and heartfelt and will send you down memory lane, this is the podcast for you.
