Sweet Treats and Fried Eats

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JCU chapter.

It’s a familiar college girl scenario. It’s been a long week: three exams, a few papers, a presentation or two. But now, it’s Friday and you’re looking for the perfect treat, the refreshment that will make all your long hours of toil worth it, or that will allow you to forget about your impending 1000-word-essay due Monday (because your professor is into the cruelest form of torture), well, at least for a little while. You’re experiencing the classic craving combination: the salty-and-sweet. Normally, you would just reach for your jar of Nutella and your bag of pretzels, but you’ve already done that multiple times this week (you know it’s true: Nutella is the best antidepressant). What is a girl to do?

Have no fear: a place exists only a short venture from campus which breaks you free of monotony and satisfies your craving, all in one delicious swoop: ice cream and French fries.

Yes. I said it. The Holy Grail of junk food combinations: Ice cream AND French fries.

Okay, my mouth is watering.

Sweetie Fry (because who doesn’t love a clever name?), which stands in all its delicious glory on Lee Road, home of the Cedar Lee Theater and other well-known college student favorites, boasts a menu that part simple, part unexpected. The general theme is simple: ice cream and fries, but the simplicity stops there. Ice cream and fry flavors range from sweet classics to unexpectedly delicious combinations that make your mouth, heart, and stomach happy.

Allow me to describe the average experience in this establishment. You walk in, overwhelmed with sights and smells of ice cream flavors and deep-fried deliciousness, and are greeted by one of the ice cream scoopers who asks to take your order. Speechless, you struggle to respond, staring blankly at the menu board as if you can’t remember a word of English besides: “Ice cream. I’d like some ice cream… Oh, and some fries?” an utterance which, of course isn’t very helpful in this place, with numerous ice cream and fry flavors. Lucky for you, by sampling French Toast (a personal favorite of mine), Mint Chocolate Chip (an improvement on the classic, if such a thing is possible), or Maple Bacon (salty and sweet in one delicious spoonful), you can attempt to decide on a flavor. The uniqueness of the place continues, as you are asked to choose a different flavor for a signature “Sweetie Scoop,” a miniature scoop of ice cream that is placed on top of your order. Your attention then shifts to the fry portion of the menu. Your jaw drops as you are yet to make another decision: the classic Idaho Potato Shoestring Fries, the Chili Cheese Fries, or the Bacon Cheddar Fries? Or, do I go for something a little more adventurous like the Parmesan and Truffle Oil Fries or the Gorgonzola and Tabasco Fries? After deciding on a choice, you pay and take a seat. When your food is ready, your name is called, and you retrieve your delicious spuds and scoops of heaven. Then, you dive in, cautiously, then all at once, enjoying each delicious bite. You smile… And mentally plan which unique flavor to try next time.

So, why not take a chance and experience some unique twists on classic favorites? You never know, your Friday night might just turn into a Fry-day night.
