Standing by LeBron James

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JCU chapter.

As we slide into the upcoming MBA season, the LeBron-shaped hole in most Clevelanders’ (and all Cavs fans) heart is more painful than ever. LBJ, an Akron-native, announced his move to the Los Angeles Lakers this past summer. The news was deja vu of LeBron’s 2010 “The Decision” where he said the infamous line: “taking my talents to South Beach”. After that, many angry Cavs fans burned their #23 jerseys and changed the slogan “Witness” to “Quitness” in response to the revelation. Although the news that LBJ was leaving for LA was not a complete surprise this summer, the hurt from Cleveland was evident. While feelings of betrayal, anger, and general sadness are understandable, LeBron James should still receive Cleveland’s support. Here’s three reasons why:

  1. He Made a Promise…and Delivered

After four years playing for the Miami Heat, LeBron opted out of his contract and returned to Cleveland. He said “what’s most important for me is bringing one trophy back to Northeast Ohio”. One of LeBron’s biggest goals was to lead the Cavs to an MBA championship and he did it in 2016. The win (and the celebration afterwards) was a breath of fresh air for Cleveland and we will forever be thankful for that.

  1. LeBron Gives Back to the Community

LBJ has consistently donated money to The Boys and Girls Club of America and has been an active volunteer in both Cleveland and Miami. He will likely continue to work with the organization in LA as well. LBJ has create two organizations himself to better the lives of Northeast Ohio children. The After School All Stars program and the I Promise School are just two of LeBron’s projects based in Akron.

  1. His Roots are Here

It does not matter whether LeBron plays for the Cavs or the Lakers, his home will always be Northeast Ohio. Akron is where he grew up and Cleveland is where he began a career. Despite where LeBron may live or play in the future, a part of him will always be partial to home.

Although I’ll still be sporting a Cavs jersey this season, my respect and support for LeBron is undying.
