It’s that time of the year again! Halloween is the perfect holiday for all sorts of people: people who like to dress up, people who are into horror, people who like candy, etc. It’s the best holiday, at least in my biased opinion.

Video games are often the perfect medium for artists to present their horrific, artistic visions. If you’re looking to find games to play this Halloween that range from spooky fun to grim horror, there are plenty to choose from! Here are some that I highly recommend:

Grimm’s Hollow

This RPG is about Lavender, a girl who has mysteriously died and now works for Grimm as a reaper, tasked to defeat ghosts. But she soon discovers that her brother, Timmy, has become a ghost. Can Lavender help Timmy return home before Grimm finds out?

Night in the Woods

Mae Borowski has recently dropped out of college, and has returned to her parents’ home in Possum Springs. She’s found that everything has changed in the two years that she’d been away, including her friends: Gregg, Bea, and Angus, all of whom are busy with their 9-5 jobs and the struggles of adulthood. Since returning, Mae has also begun having strange dreams, which may have a connection to a mystery that soon comes to light.

Omori

Omori goes on various misadventures with his friends Kel, Aubrey, and Hero. As they search for their friend, Basil, it’s soon revealed that it’s all a dream. One constructed by Sunny, a boy who isolates himself in his home and the real counterpart to Omori. What happened to Sunny, and how is it related to the dream world that he’s created?

Important note: this game contains depictions of sensitive material. Please be sure to read up on any and all content warnings for Omori before playing.

Subway Midnight

There is a subway train that contains a seemingly endless amount of cars with their own, twisted theme. Lizz finds herself trying to escape from a shadowy figure following her. She comes across a colorful cast of characters, all of whom had mysteriously disappeared on the train before meeting their untimely ends. Will Lizz be the next victim?

Portia Coulter is a writer at Indiana University of Pennsylvania's HER Campus chapter. She covers topics in the entertainment industry, ranging from video games to animation. Portia is also an editor for Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s New Growth Art Review, having joined earlier this year. Some of her work has previously been published in the 2023 edition of the New Growth Art Review; they were also submitted to that year’s horror competition: a short story that won 2nd place and an art piece that won 3rd. Currently an English Literature/Culture major with a minor in Communications Media, Portia plans to graduate in May 2024 and pursue her dream of writing an original graphic novel series. In her free time, Portia likes to play video games (she has a crippling Genshin Impact addiction), watch cartoons, sing and dance, and is currently learning how to knit and crochet. She likes to create a plethora of different fan works for her favorite series, from art to short fiction. It also serves as a good way to hone her craft as an artist. An introvert at heart, Portia likes to hide in her room, curled up under a mountain of blankets, and watch the newest romance anime while she attempts to knit a scarf.
