Halloween Costumes for the Modern Girl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IUP chapter.

Can you believe we’re already midway through October? The leaves are beginning to fall, the weather is shifting and fall fashion is on the rise. That’s right ladies, it’s almost time. No, not time for the semester to be over; time for Halloween!

We all love getting dolled up and this holiday lets us release our inner five year old. The only problem we tend to run into when it comes to Halloween is coming with a costume idea that isn’t dated. Have no fear, Her Campus IUP is here! We’ve compiled a list of six costumes to get your creative juices flowing.

Geek Out:
The first costume idea on our list is the nerd. This costume is so cute and simple; it’s hard to NOT want to try. All that is required for this getup are a button-up blouse, plaid skirt, glasses and stockings (maybe some suspenders for extra flair!). How much simpler does it get? Dressing as a nerd is possibly the best costume for the modern girl on the go who doesn’t want to spend too much time deciding on the night’s outfit.

Freeze Bad Boy:
That’s right, the ever so popular cop costume is up next. Now, before you think this is way too cliché, really imagine wearing this costume. Cops have such a great amount of authority; why not dress up in this empowering outfit? This costume is recommended for the modern girl who wants to show just how much she likes to be in control.

You’ll Never Catch Me:
The next costume we have come up with is the robber costume. This is one that you don’t see too often and that’s one of the greatest things about it. Dressing up as a robber merely requires black clothing. There are so many different ways to do this costume. We suggest a black cap, black and white striped shirt, black pants and black shoes. That’s it! It’s so simple to dress this costume up in different ways. Try this out and tell us about how you liked it.

Giddy Up:
A costume that seems to be perfect the IUP girl is the cowgirl costume. It’s not odd to hear country music when walking around Indiana. In fact, IUP has hosted many of the biggest names in country music at the KCAC. We live for country out here. So why not pay even greater homage on Halloween? Grab your cowboy boots, your plaid button up, daisy dukes and your cutest cowboy hat and head out. This idea is one of the simplest for the simple fact that many of us already have these items in our closets. You’ll look cute, fun and flirty without even trying.

Meeeooww:
You guessed it; the next costume on the list is a cat. This is another costume that you can personalize and really make your own. One way to do this costume is to purchase an all-black one-piece from a store such as Rue 21, Wet Seal or Strawberry as well as cute little ears that can be found at Wal-Mart. This way is much cheaper than purchasing an oversized cat outfit, plus you’ll look much nicer.

Hop on Your Broom:
Yes, we did mention that we want to get rid of the dated Halloween costume. However the next costume on this list the witch. You may be questioning why this would be included on a list for modern girls. Well, what do you think of when you think of Halloween? If you were to make a list, a witch is one of the first things on there. Sometimes you have to mention the classics and this costume can be done in so many different ways. You can be a sexy wicked witch, a beautiful good witch, a cross between the two. Mix up these ideas and see what you come up with.

So, we hope that you at least have a few more ideas for what you’re going to dress up as in a few weeks. No matter what you go out as always remember to be safe, comfortable and warm.
