Campus Safety: The NO-MACE way to have a Safe day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IUP chapter.

So, you’re walking down the street heading back to your dorm. Naturally, you have your keys between your fingers—Wolverine-style—and a heightened sense of paranoia. Wait! That shadow moved! Anyway, since it was a leaf, I can tell you that it is probably a good idea to consider a few things before finding yourself in an uncomfortable position.

In a perfect world, Campus Safety wouldn’t be something we would have to worry about, but I want all collegiettes to have a safe college experience in the world we live in! First, don’t go out alone if you feel uncomfortable. You’ve heard your mom say this and your dad probably nodded, but in any occasion, you just really shouldn’t do it. Instead, find a few friends and go together! A better way to say this is that you should have expectations of those with whom you go out. In your group of people, did you discuss whether you are all going home together? Will someone check in on you if you decide to leave the party/class with someone else? The Bottom line is: WILL YOU RETURN HOME SAFELY? Nobody likes being the person to discover the body SVU-style behind the bush. Don’t be that body. Another way to stay safe is to be aware. I don’t mean deer-in-headlights; I mean that you should know where you are going! Where is the get-together? Has someone in your group been there before? DOES THE PLACE EVEN EXIST? If not, you should check it out before going there.

Now, you got your girls together, know where you are going, and even got there. Now what? Know your limits. Maybe that body shot off of the cute guy from the football team is not such a good idea— especially if you already had a few beers. JUST BE RESPONSIBLE! Please remember that The Penn will remember even if you don’t. Regardless of whether it is Friday night or Monday night, know your resources. The IUP Police have an escort service at all times. Just call the University Police with the extension 2141. ((724) 357-2141) In addition to this valuable provision, the blue light systems all over campus answer to emergencies and will have the police there in minutes. Even if these various tips and resources still find you desirous of personal protection, make sure to review the Student Conduct policies on weapons to make sure that your safety mechanism is approved by the campus police.

With these tips from The Haven Project’s Alisia Drew, we can move from a fear of nighttime walking into an enjoyment of a girls’ night out. Just remember that your safety is very important! For further information regarding campus safety, the Haven Project is located in Suites on Maple-East in room G-59. They provide educational programs, support for survivors of violence—both students and families of students—as well as volunteer opportunities.

Disclaimer: If you do not take these precautions and you end up in a situation that results in sexual assault or any other type of violence, it is not your fault. People like Alisia Drew and The Haven Project are great resources to support you in whatever way you may need.
