Collegiette’s Book Club: Gone Girl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IU chapter.

If you’re anything like me, the most important thing on your spring break packing list is a good book. Nothing sounds more relaxing then being half naked on the beach with a novel in one hand and a drink in the other. While my greedy eyes will read anything I can get my hands on, no book has “wowed” me in a while. Until now.

I have to admit it took me a rather long time to cure my 50 Shades of Grey hangover (I wasn’t ready to admit that Christian Grey is in fact a fictional character… or accept what happened in the 3rd book… like really?) I can honestly say that Gone Girl was the right book to make me realize there is bigger and better things out there then the Red Room of Pain.

One rainy Sunday morning I picked the book up from Barnes and Noble because what the hell, Gillian Flynn sounded like a cool enough author’s name… maybe I should read her book. Well Gillian Flynn… I’ve got to hand it to you. You’ve got one screwed up mind and I absolutely love it.

Gone Girl was everything anyone could want in a book. Suspense, mystery, and okay a little bit of sex. The first few chapters were a little slow, but then all the sudden it hits you *boom* and you’ll never put the book down. Soon I was lost in the town of North Carthage, Missouri and felt like I was walking right beside Nick on his confusing journey to find his missing wife. The only time I put down the book was to catch my breath and regain my thoughts… yes it’s that intense.

Perhaps the best part about this book is that it will keep you guessing literally up until the very last page. Several times I thought to myself, “Oh I know what happened.” Nope, just kidding. I’m an avid Law and Order: SVU watcher, and not even my ninja skills from watching the show could help me figure out this case.

A few hours and 419 pages later, I finished the book and there’s no words to describe what I was feeling once it was over. The book is utterly disturbing, horrific, and deliciously irresistible.

So download it on your e-reader, pick it up from the closest bookstore, and pack it in your carry on (or read it now.) I promise you won’t be disappointed.

*Rumor has it that Reese Witherspoon will play Amy in the movie version!*

Other books from Gillian Flynn:

Sharp Objects (I also read this one. Also a good thriller, but nothing compared to Gone Girl.)

Dark Places

Read the book and let us know what you think!
