5 Ways To Be A Healthy Hoosier

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IU chapter.

As the cold weather has started to arrive in B-Town, so have the inevitable colds of the student body. Stuffy noses and sore throats are only some of the symptoms that the average student is facing right now, not to mention the incessant cough that continues throughout your classes. While these cold symptoms may not seem like that big of a deal, they can eventually become worse. So before you have to miss out on the upcoming parties of the weekend, here are some easy things you can do to stay healthy:

1.     Sleep. It sounds easy, but getting enough sleep in college can be more challenging than a Finite midterm. Studies have proven that sleep contributes to feeling healthier and happier. So try to remember that before you pull an all-nighter at Wells and then proceed to go out Thursday night.

2.    Eat healthy. I am not telling you to never order a slice of pizza from Pizza X at 3 a.m. because that would just be hypocritical. However, during the week it is important to eat nutritious foods that will keep your body strong. Try to eat breakfast before class and grab some fruits and veggies at the C-Store the next time you stroll by McNutt.

3.    Exercise. Obviously it is difficult to make your way to the SRSC everyday, but finding little ways to exercise can make you feel healthier. Walk to class, take the stairs, or even take a stroll on Kirk with your friends.

4.    Ignore your FOMO. F.O.M.O, or Fear Of Missing Out, is a very serious epidemic that often pushes us to go out on nights that we should probably stay in. You aren’t going to lose your friends from one night in, nor will you probably miss anything that won’t happen again the next night. So if you aren’t feeling too hot, stay in and relax! I am sure your friends would be in for a movie night every once in a while, and it will make you feel 100 times better the next day.

5.    Drink. No, I am not referring to alcohol (though temporarily that may make you feel better), but drink plenty of other liquids. Water, orange juice, and milk are all great options that can give you plenty of energy to get through the week. They have many natural vitamins that will make you feel strong. So the next time you are about to grab your 5th cup of coffee at the Union, opt for some OJ and you may be surprised at how much better you’ll feel.
