The weirdness of the month of March has apparently spread past Ithaca’s weather forecast; a bunch of our favorite celebrity couples have split, and we just can’t help but wonder (like when it switches from 60 and sunny to a blizzard in half an hour), “what’s happening?”
It all started with Jason Segel (How I met Your Mother) and Michele Williams (Oz the Great and Powerful). They broke up in late February as a result of long-distance difficulties. Their low-profile relationship apparently ended quietly, but we all know heartbreak (no matter the volume) is no easy feat.
Days later, Michael Sheen (Midnight in Paris) split with Mean Girls and The Notebook starlet Rachel McAdams. Though the pair only dated for about a year, they made a handsome couple that defied the 10-year age difference between them. Though we’re saddened for them both, it’s not nearly as devastating as her breakup with the increasingly popular (and handsome) Ryan Gosling (swoon).
Two weeks later, America’s most successful dynamic duo broke up after two years: Julianne Hough and Ryan Seacrest. We can bet her dancing won’t be quite as lively and his radio voice won’t seem quite as perky as before. It wasn’t long ago that Hough was splashed across the cover and inside spread of Cosmopolitan’s February issue, gushing about her perfect relationship with Seacrest. But all good things must come to an end, right?
Or you could go with a more cynic approach from the wise lyrics of Paramore’s Misery Business: “Second chances, they don’t ever matter; people never change.” Hey, Katy Perry and John Mayer, we’re talking to you. The couple broke up in August and promptly reunited, but couldn’t make it for the long haul and recently split again. Mayer’s reputation with collegiettes can’t take another punch like T-Swift’s “Dear John,” so hopefully Perry won’t scald him too badly in her next album.
The stars’ relationships may not be surviving, but that doesn’t mean yours can’t. Don’t lose hope just because the Seal/Heidi Klum super-couples of the world can’t stay together. Just look—Kanye and Kim are going strong (at least for now).
