As the 2016 elections quickly approach, many candidates (20. Yes, there are 20), have begun vying for one of the most important votes: millennials and women (I’m not biased at all *sarcasm*). Out of these 20 candidates, only two women are running to potentially become commander-in-chief: Carly Fiorina and Hillary Clinton. Although they are on opposite sides of the political spectrum, there are some things (actually really just one thing) that they can agree on:
Women’s Rights
Both Fiorina and Hillary are avid supporters of women’s rights. In the recent CNN Republican Debate held at the Reagan Library, when asked about which women to put on a 10 dollar bill, Fiorina replied with:
“I wouldn’t change the 10 dollar bill or the 20 dollar bill. I think, honestly, it’s a gesture. I don’t think it helps to change our history. What I would think is that we ought to recognize that women are not a special interest group. Women are the majority of this nation. We are half the potential of this nation, and this nation will be better off when every woman can live the life she chooses.” (Fiorina, 2015)
In a speech given by Clinton in 1995 at the U.N. 4th World Conference on Women Plenary Session, she stated:
“We need to understand there is no one formula for how women should lead [their] lives. That is why we must respect the choices that each woman makes for herself and her family. Every woman deserves the chance to realize her own God-given potential. But we must recognize that women will never gain full dignity until their human rights are respected and protected” (Hillary, 1995)
We should be proud to have such strong women fighting for suffrage, but now let’s move on to some topics that they do not agree on:
Abortion
Fiorina: Opposes abortion 20 weeks after fertilization, except in cases of rape, incest or danger to the life of the mother. She has said that she would overturn Roe v. Wade if she had the chance.
Clinton: “Family planning is an important part of women’s health and reproductive health includes access abortion.”
Gay Marriage
Fiorina: Opposes the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision allowing same-sex marriage in all 50 states.
Clinton: Although in the past, Clinton had been quoted that she believed marriage was between a man and a woman, she has now stated that her view has ‘evolved, and now supports it.
Taxes
Fiorina: Supports tax cuts and simplification.
Clinton: Would consider closing corporate tax loopholes and cutting taxes for the middle class.
Iran
Fiorina: Opposes nuclear deal.
Clinton: Supports nuclear deal.
Affordable Care Act
Fiorina: Would repeal the Affordable Care Act.
Clinton: Would support and strengthen the affordable care act.
Immigration
Fiorina: Supports legal status of children brought to the US illegally but opposes path to citizenship for adults saying it is ‘unfair’ to those who immigrate legally.
Clinton: Supports immigration reform, offering a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants in some cases.
Education
Fiorina: Supported No Child Left Behind.
Hillary: Opposed No Child Left Behind.
