Campus Celeb? Willie Sleight!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ithaca chapter.

Major: Communications Management and Design

Minor: Integrated Marketing Communications and Politics

Hometown: Staatsburg, NY

Campus Involvement: IC Senior Class 2012, IC Voicestream, IC Food for Thought

Extracurriculars: Intramural Soccer, Volunteering at South, Project Look Sharp Intern

HC: What brought you to IC?
WS: I came to Ithaca College because I loved the surrounding area and know someone who went here from my high school. She was studying CMD and it seemed like a perfect fit. IC also offered me the highest amount of scholarship and financial aid so I took advantage of it. I was pretty naive with college searches and had no idea what I wanted to do. My top choices were Ithaca, Penn State, University of Boston and University of Delaware. It ultimately came down to money, location and size. One of those four were not like the others so I chose that one, Ithaca.

HC: What are you involved in?
WS: I am the Director of Communications for Senior Class, the Treasurer for IC Voicestream, a member of Food for Thought and have been involved with ICTV and IC After Dark.

HC: (Why) are you involved?
WS: I am a member of Senior Class because I want to help make my final semester here unforgettable and do something to really be a part of my class and give back to it. I love singing hence my membership in the co-ed a cappella group, IC Voicestream and I love Food for Thought’s mission of promoting education and ending hunger all over the world.

HC:What’s your favorite thing about …(any of them)?
WS: My favorite thing about IC Voicestream is getting together with a group of my close friends and making incredible music. I will miss this group the most.

HC: What’s one thing you’d change about IC if you could?
WS: If I could change one thing, it would be the mindset of many people. I wish more people would get involved and take initiative to DO something. I hate when I hear people say they do not want to get involved because it is stupid or think things are lame or that they missed out or are too late. I think co-curricular experience is just as important as what we learn in the classroom or on the field.

HC: What’s your dream job/position?
WS: Ideally, I would love to work in disaster politics as a practitioner who can change legislation and make management of disaster about helping the right people, not covering up mistakes for others.

HC: What do you do outside of  your organizations and academic life?
WS: I love playing soccer and running. I also like finding new foods and trying them. Ithaca is perfect for that. A new hobby of mine is job searching…which yes, is as bad as it sounds.

HC: You’re a senior! What’s something you’re determined to do in your last semester?
WS: I really want to reinforce friendships so they do not end with graduation. I will really miss this place and all the amazing people I have been lucky enough to meet and interact with.

HC: Anything you’ve got coming up for any of these organizations?
WS: IC Voicestream’s Block III concert! Boom!

KC Weston is a sophomore at Ithaca College currently studying Communication, Management, and Design in the Park School of Communications, with a concentration in Corporate Communications and a minor in African Diaspora Studies. KC is currently a member of IC Voicestream, Ithaca College's premier co-ed a capella group, and founder of Diversity in Action, a discussion based student organization focusing on discussing issues of age, ability, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, race, belief system, and socio-economic status. She also is a contributing writer to both 360 magazine, IC's narrative-style publication and to Buzzsaw Magazine, IC's alternative- style magazine. KC is also a student tour guide, an MLK Scholar, and a volunteer at the Ithaca State Theatre. When not rushing to a meeting, writing, or living in the library, KC enjoys performing with her band, Second Dam, watching the worst movies Netflix has to offer, and (most importantly) relxaing. In the future she hopes to live abroad for a couple years after college and /or to later work as a performer or work with performers by running a concert and event venue or booking company.
