Mom’s Weekend Must: Clement’s Comedy Cafe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

In the fall, Dad’s Weekend is easy to plan for, since it always falls on a home football game weekend. But in the springtime, can be difficult to find plans that both you and your mom can enjoy.  Maybe you’re not twenty-one, or the campus bars just aren’t your mom’s scene. Mom’s Weekend is in one month so plan your fun-filled weekend now!

This year, switch it up and bring your mom to Clements Comedy Café on Saturday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Virginia Theatre in Champaign!  Tickets are only $10 and your mom gets in for free!  It’s also a great way to give back to the community because this year’s ticket sales go to support the Emergency Basic Service Fund, supported by the United Way of Champaign County and the C-U Schools Foundation.

Jessie “Tony” Clements is a University of Illinois alumnus who graduated in 1971 and also played on both the football and basketball teams during his college career.  Tony worked as the Director of the Division of Campus Recreation at the University of Illinois until he retired in January of 2009.

Tony’s true passion is stand up comedy.  He was on “Showtime” (the cable movie and entertainment channel) as part of its Funniest Man in America Contest. In 1998, Tony was asked to be the warm-up act when President Clinton and Vice President Gore visited the University of Illinois!

Illini PRA members are helping out with the show by putting together a public relations campaign.  Committee leader, Darlene Naolhu said that the café is a “new and refreshing way for students to bond with their moms away from the typical college drinking scene. For those students who just want to spend some good quality time with their mom, this is definitely the place to go.”

Tony said that this year, you can also look forward to hearing the Tons of Fun Band as they play music from our moms’ era.  He said, “We write material specific for this show, in most cases it’s the first time we’ve ever done it. We always introduce more than just stand up comedy, we bring a unique piece of comedy to the show.”  In the past, they’ve brought moms on stage to dance, juggled and even had a routine with an opera singer.

Make it a fun night out and add a nice dinner with your mom before the show!  A great website to try to find something mom would like is: http://www.urbanspoon.com/c/106/Champaign-restaurants.html
