Intern Blog: Where to Look for Help with the Job Hunt

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

On the Job Hunt? Know Where to Look.

They say, “Good things come to those who wait,” but when it comes to landing that dream internship of yours, waiting will only leave you – well – waiting.

Now is the time to actively seek that seemingly elusive summer internship, finalize applications and secure interviews by applying early. Haven’t quite found the internship you’re looking for? Not to worry, these resources will help ease your search process so that you can use this winter break to get ahead.

When it comes to finding internship opportunities through services on campus, you’re in luck. Illinois is teeming with resources for job-seeking students. No matter your field of interest or type of experience, these helpful databases and networks will lead you in the right direction.

Don’t overlook these helpful links.

For students of any major or career interest:
The Career Center’s Job & Internship Database is an excellent starting point.  Use the search feature to browse internships and full-time jobs in your chosen industry and location (including international opportunities!).
Students and recent alumni are encouraged to register with I-Link, another online resource provided by The Career Center as a collaborative effort with the ILLINI NACElink Network. This resource is unique because of its interactive features allowing students to post resumes, submit applications, set up interviews, access a calendar complete with upcoming programs and events as well as receive e-mail updates when relevant job openings are posted.

The Office of Student Financial Aid posts internship and job opportunities in the Champaign-Urbana area on the Virtual Job Board. Search for openings at the University or look through non-University positions ranging from science-based research to retail. This is particularly useful for students looking to build work experience while on campus.

Graduating seniors, did you know there is an Alumni Career Center?
That’s right; career assistance doesn’t end after graduation! The Illinois Alumni Association provides career transition assistance to fellow Illini grads seeking jobs or undergoing a career change. Set up advising appointments, purchase a Career Exploration Package at a discounted rate, or attend one of the monthly Professional Development Workshops.

Online resources every Collegiette should know about:
Find some amazing opportunities on Intern Queen Inc.’s Job Listings page. Available positions are organized by city, semester and industry, making it that much easier for you to personalize your search. Submit your resume and join their “Hot List” to receive emails with recent job postings in your industry. Most popular listings include internships in journalism, public relations, marketing, business, fashion, entertainment and web development.
Simply Hired is another useful job listings website. Free, straightforward and end-user friendly, this site provides advanced search features, including date posted as well as education and experience required, which allows for more refined search results.

If you haven’t already, make a profile on LinkedIn to enhance your job search by networking online with classmates, colleagues and find out more about opportunities in your industry. Before starting your search, I recommend reading about the Top 10 LinkedIn Job Search Tips for some great insight!
Good luck searching!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
