Health & Fitness: Top 10 Healthy Dorm Food Hacks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Many of you Collegiates know, dorm food is not always the best and definitely not always healthy.  It’s hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle at school when the food you are being served is usually fried and greasy. Here are my ten favorite healthy and delicious meal alternatives that are easy to make in the dorms with the food that is already provided Enjoy!

10.  Apple with Peanut Butter

All you have to do is slice up your apple and grab some peanut butter packets. This will fill you up and help you eat less of your unhealthy main dish and more of your apple!

9. Strawberries and Chocolate

If you’re craving something sweet, which I always am, then this treat is for you! All you have to do is take a bowl full of chocolate chips and stick them in the microwave. Then you can just slice up some fruit and dip them into chocolate.

8. Edamame

Edamame is one of my all-time favorite beans, but I’m always discouraged from them when I notice they are still frozen! I like to warm them in the microwave and then sprinkle a little bit of salt on top! It tastes like they are straight from a sushi restaurant!

7. Pita and Hummus

I like to toast my pita, fill it with hummus and then stick a few cucumbers inside. You can even slice pieces of grilled chicken to add some protein to this meal.

6. Wheat bread+ Peanut Butter+ Bananas

I like to toast a piece of wheat bread, spread peanut butter on one side and then slice bananas on top. I think this is a great snack that is also very filling and high in protein.

5. Cut up grilled chicken with salad

This one is easy. All you have to do is make a salad as usual, but then take a piece of grilled chicken and chop it into your salad.

4. Grilled chicken lettuce wrap

For this recipe, look for the biggest piece of lettuce you can find in the dining hall. Then, put a piece of grilled chicken inside and a little of your favorite salad dressing!

3. Grilled chicken+ broccoli+ wheat pasta+ cheese

Fill your plate about half way with wheat pasta. Then, take a piece of chicken and chop it into tiny, bite-size pieces. Next, take broccoli and slice it into tiny pieces. Finally, combine all the ingredients together, add some mozzarella cheese and put it in the microwave for 20 seconds!

2. Yogurt Parfait

This is very simple and easy to make! All you have to do is grab your favorite yogurt, a little bit of granola from the cereal station and some strawberries. Slice the fruit into your yogurt and add some granola, and you now have your own homemade yogurt parfait!

1. Broccoli

This is by far my favorite dish to make in the cafeteria! Since the broccoli is not cooked in the salad bar, I like to steam it myself! I take a plate full of broccoli and go to the Panini maker. There, I put the broccoli on the skillet, put a little bit of olive oil and garlic salt on and then steam them for about 2 minutes. Very Delish!
