HC Illinois: Getting the Most Out of Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Summer is a great time to catch up with friends, relax, layout by the pool and have an all around good time.  While relaxing and laying out by the pool you might want to take some time to re-evaluate how the past year went. What was great about it, and what could have went better?  It is possible that you could have done better academically, or might have not been able to balance school and a social life.

If your grades were not as high as you would have liked them to be, take some time and reflect on what you could do to improve them.  Balancing a social life and grades is very hard, but if you plan ahead, stay organized and procrastinate as little as possible, it is possible to have both good grades and a fabulous social life.  Planning ahead is an essential in having both.  Over the summer take some time to look into the classes you are taking next semester.  You can see what other students who have taken the class thought of the professor at ratemyprofessors.com.  This way you can really see what you are getting yourself into, and how much time will needed to be devoted to every class.

Summer is also a great time to lose the freshman fifteen.  According to Medline Plus Medical Encyclopedia, a person can healthily lose up to two pounds a week.   Adults should try to get in at least two in half hours of aerobic exercise per week.  That is only 22 minutes a day!  A person also has to be committed to weight loss and living a healthy lifestyle.  If losing weight is one of your summer goals, you must be patient.  It might be a few weeks before you see results, but the results will come as long as you are committed to eating healthy and exercising.

When most people from your high school group of friends go to different colleges, it can become hard to maintain strong friendships throughout the year.  Summer is a great time to call old friends and catch up.  Everyone’s’ lives change so much in college, which means it is really important to see where your high school are at in their lives and how they are doing.  If both you and your friends make the effort to reconnect, your friendships may be stronger by the end of the summer than they ever were before.

Here’s to a happy and productive summer!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
