Going the (Half) Distance: Staying Motivated

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Only two more weeks until the big day! Where did all the time go?!?

As we’re headed into the final stretch of the semester, I’m finding that my days are composed of me checking off a long list of tasks that need to be done. Wake up, eat breakfast, go to class, go to work, eat [late] lunch, go to class, finish a group project, go to a meeting, go to an exam review, start reading the one million pages of that book that I never opened before my exam, final cramming panic session, and then if there’s time…Instant Netflix. Oh, and I guess throw sleep at the end of that list.

Did anyone see time for my daily run? That’s because there isn’t. Unfortunately, as my schoolwork piles on, I’ve been making training as a lower priority. I will admit, I did this for a few days in a row, and it’s been seriously hurting my progress. I thought that taking a break wouldn’t hurt, since my training has been so consistent.

Unfortunately, that was not the case. After my few consecutive days of rest, I went back to the track at CRCE and was exhausted after one mile. My muscles were tired, I thought my shins were going to explode, and I felt sluggish. I was tired of doing the same routine over and over—running the same distance at the same time in the same place. It was time to switch my routine up, and find new ways to stay motivated.

Go for an early morning run
Okay, this may sound crazy, but running in the morning is quite possibly one of the most fulfilling feelings. I am definitely one to hit the snooze button (multiple times) when my alarm goes off in the morning, but trust me, if you have a 10 a.m. class and you normally sleep until 9, try waking up at 8 and going for a jog. Campus is quieter in the morning and the weather is usually a little brisk. The coolness of the air wakes you up, and because this is the first task of your day, your mind is clearer. By the end of your run, you will feel exhilarated and extremely proud of yourself for completing your workout. Plus, you won’t have to worry about it for the rest of the day!

Go for a night run
Don’t have time during the day? How about at the end?!? Running at night is an equally exhilarating feeling. Ask a friend to go with you; don’t ever run alone at night! This is the perfect opportunity to catch up with someone and tell each other those stories that you’ve been waiting to share. It’s also a great time to clear your mind after a stressful day. When you go back home, take a shower and put on your most comfortable PJs. It truly is a fantastic feeling, and you will have a wonderful night’s sleep!

Go for a bike ride
Have you ever biked to the arboretum or Japan house? Or just around campus? With the warm weather, I encourage all of you to exercise outside as much as possible! Biking is a terrific way to strengthen your calves and thighs – and you get to go to explore many new areas. The warm air and sunshine will instantly put you in a good mood. Don’t have a bike? Borrow one from a friend!

If you have time for Facebook…
…You have time to train. I admit that I am one of those people who tell myself that I don’t have time to keep training…yet I can spend a solid half hour on Facebook or Pinterest. Believe me, your time will be well spent if you exercise. This is a better way to take a break from studying, anyways!

Stretch on the Quad
On the days when the Quad is filled with sunbathers, frisbee throwers and nappers, go join them! After your workout, walk to the Quad for a stretching cool-down. Soak up the sun as you relax your muscles and enjoy a beautiful view of campus.

And as always, STAY HYDRATED!!! You’re almost there :)

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
