Food Blog: Great Birthday Restaurants!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

I am a firm believer in the sacred power of birthdays. Let’s look at the facts, shall we? One’s birthday is the one day of the year when it is socially acceptable to put the focus all on us. We can request whatever we want and people have to give it to us.  It is okay to be sung to and it is okay to wear a tiara because it is your special day. (C’mon…I can’t be the only one who does that!) My friends always make fun of me for saying my birthday is my favorite holiday, but I am telling you—when February 6 rolls around, the party is on.

One of the traditions that makes the day even better is the birthday dinner.  Since we all have different food personalities, it’s unlikely that my choice will be the same as say, my roommate’s. (Red Lobster all the way, baby!) Luckily, Champaign-Urbana is diverse and has a variety of restaurants from which to choose. My personal favorites include the following:

Basil Thai (Thai)

There are many different places that serve Asian food, but one of the classiest and most delicious restaurants is Basil Thai. Located on the outskirts of downtown Urbana, Basil has so many things for Thai lovers. Their Woonsen Pad Thai with shrimp always makes me happy. If you like spicier things, the Thai Spice Red Curry dish is also good. The restaurant is in a good location and has  a nice atmosphere appropriate for birthday dinners. The best part about Thai food is that it’s healthy, yet oh-so-yummy, so you feel good about yourself while your taste buds dance in sheer delight.

Dos Reales (Mexican)

Though it’s a little bit out the way, Dos Reales is the prime spot for some of the best Mexican food around town. Dos food is priced quite reasonably too. For example, you could get a plate of two enchiladas, refried beans, and Mexican rice for only $8. I do not think anywhere has quesadillas that are as good as the ones at Dos Reales. Honestly, I could eat just their rice and still be satisfied.Plus, if you’re over 21 (or turning 21), the margaritas are amazing. According to my legal friends, everyone should drink a peach margarita for their birthday at least once.

Destihl (Artisan)

This semi-new downtown Champaign restaurant is one of my favorite places in the whole wide world. Although it is a pretty pricey establishment compared to the aforementioned, collegiettes can stay on a budget by ordering several small plates and appetizers, such as the shrimp ceviche or the addicting beer-battered asparagus. Destihl is a bit more swanky than your typical college town eatery, so you should definitely look your best. One of the coolest things about Destihl is that it brews its own beer at the on-site microbrewery. So again, you get to taste some amazing drinks on tap if you are of age. Destihl also has a nice selection of cocktails, including the reportedly very delicious Destihl Mai Tai.

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
