Fashion: Weather the Winter Cold in Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

The days are getting shorter, the air is getting colder and we’ve already seen the first snowfall of the season. We all know what this means: winter is right around the corner. Long gone are the days of minimal clothing, sunglasses and sunscreen being the outerwear needed to protect you from the elements.

It’s time to layer on the clothes and bundle up for the cold weather ahead — something almost every girl dreads. After all, no one wants to walk around campus looking like the abominable snowman in all those layers. But don’t fret, Collegiates! Lots of layers don’t have to look frumpy. Here are some great pieces of outerwear to add to your winter wardrobe that’ll make dressing for the cold a little more bearable.

Coats

A great coat is a staple for winter on this campus. This winter, the mixed media trend is huge when it comes to coats. Mixed media just means that rather than sticking to one type of fabric, two or more fabrics are used, for example, tweed and fleece. My favorite type of mixed media coat is anything including leather, such as this Mackage asymmetrical coat from Nordstrom.

Leather never looks drab and holds well against the winter’s inclement weather. The added bonus of the mixed media trend is that it can be found in virtually any style of coat you want. This means that if you consider your style to be more classic, there’s the perfect mixed media trench coat for you. But, if you consider yourself to be more sporty and casual, there’s a mixed media parka for you as well. This trend reaches across all styles, making it the perfect piece to throw on when you’re headed out the door.

Boots

Another necessity for winter is the perfect pair of boots. While riding boots are the go to for fall, winter weather calls for something a little more durable: snow boots. Like winter coats, though, boots often get the bad reputation for being clunky and unfashionable.

Brands like Sorel and The North Face are great places to start on your search because they are breaking the stereotype and creating boots that are both cute and cut out for the snow and cold. Sorel’s popular “Joan of Artic Boot” comes in multiple colors and has a touch of fur on the top. On the other hand, The North Face offers a slimmer, sleeker option with their Snowtropolis Boot. No matter your preference is, both are sure to keep your feet warm and dry on your walk to class!

Vests

Last on your list of outerwear should be a vest. Whether it’s a sporty, puffer vest or a classic, herringbone puffer vest, it will give you added warmth as well as style.

One of this winter’s trends is the fur vest. When people think of fur vests, their minds probably jump to the obnoxiously furry ones, but more subtle ones are becoming more and more popular. This asymmetrical fur vest from Revolve Clothing is perfect for winter. But, for those of you not looking to break the bank, there are tons of faux fur options in the same styles at a fraction of the price, like this one also from Revolve Clothing.

So while we’re all dreading the snow, wind and cold that winter inevitably brings, with these pieces of outerwear you’ll be able to brave the weather in style!
