Fashion: Taking On The Seasons

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

What would the world be without the seasons? For starters, we would have a very boring wardrobe with no versatility whatsoever. Our clothes would only be needed to serve for one specific type of weather, and the rest of our apparel would be non-existent. In our case, it’s safe to say that we’ll never be in that predicament, so let’s talk about different things to fashion for this cold, bitter winter coming our way.

The first thing you are going to need to conquer these upcoming months is a jacket that will keep you cozy, comfortable and don’t forget stylish! Trying to save a little cash? Don’t spend your money (or time) looking for a lighter, winter jacket and later on realizing that you need a heavier, puffier one. Tip: buy a jacket that is in between weights and pair layers underneath to keep you warm even on the snowiest of days. It will definitely last you throughout the winter, and as an added bonus, you’ll save some money along the way!

We all know a jacket won’t be the only necessity on our lists of things we need for the winter season. Coming in next on the list of winter essentials are leggings, but not the flimsy kind that you’re able to purchase throughout the year. I’m talking about warm, thick leggings that will keep your legs thanking you for days. You can play them up any way you want, sport them with a pattern, rock a more laid-back style or dress them up for the part.

As we experience the weather turning and our wardrobes shifting, scarves are pieces that take more prominent roles in our closets. These pieces are a classic investment no matter what time of year, but come in handy mostly throughout the colder months. Scarves have become less of a necessity over the years and more of an accessory. It is definitely the cherry on top of an outfit. A scarf is the finishing piece that adds both layers and style to an outfit.

Don’t leave your ears out in the cold; there are so many different things that can be fashioned for headwear. Whether it is a knit cap, a hat with flaps, a thick and fuzzy headband or earmuffs, headwear is a definite buy for the cold season ahead. Have fun with it! This winter season is full of activities, and believe me, your headwear will be your best friend throughout these festivities.

The last necessity on our list is most often worn below layers of clothing and covered up throughout the warmer seasons. They make their big debut in cold, winter months. They have developed over the years into a fashion statement if worn the right way. Socks! Who doesn’t want happy feet in the winter?

Socks have recently become so diverse and can be styled in many different ways. My season favorite is a pair of warm, soft socks with a funky pattern that portray my quirky style.
