Fashion Blog: Designer Spotlight – Rebecca Taylor

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Since I was first exposed to Rebecca Taylor while working at Nordstrom, I’ve been a fan of her designs. Her clothing is feminine with a vintage twist. It’s very wearable, while at the same time being interesting, which isn’t the easiest thing to accomplish. You can imagine how excited I was when I found out that one of her shows this year would be held at Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis, where coincidentally, my best friend has an internship, allowing me to work or attend the show. Before I attend her show, I decided I should brush up on my Rebecca Taylor knowledge and I wanted to give Her Campus readers the opportunity to get to know a little about one of my favorite designers at the same time. Below are a few of my favorite pieces from her Summer 2011 line and some ways you can incorporate the trends she’s used into your own wardrobe.

In her Summer 2011 and Fall 2011 collection, Rebecca Taylor is spot on in her usage of bright colors. I absolutely love this fuchsia, Grecian inspired dress. The combination of the sweetheart neckline, pleating and pockets highlights Taylor’s impeccable eye for detail. The pants in the second photograph are another example of a great way she uses color in her collection. The shorter, cropped pant also makes a nice transition from summer shorts to fall pants.

Rebecca Taylor’s collection is actually fairly reasonable as far as designer items go, but if you can’t afford the slightly steep price tag, I found some items just like hers that you can get on a budget! Although I haven’t found anything as good as the original, below is a bright dress I found that is reasonably priced with some interesting detail, just like the Rebecca Taylor dress.

These pants are from Asos.com and are a great way to copy the look from above on a budget. I like that these pants are high-waisted and only slightly cropped. Wear with a jacket, if you want to copy the styling done at the Rebecca Taylor show, or just with a simple shirt and heels to let the pants stand on their own.

Her Summer 2011 Collection also features a lot of sheer pieces. This is another trend I like a lot; it’s easy to play with layering and let the clothes be as sheer (or not sheer) as you want. Sheer fabric shows up in all different types of clothing in her collection, from tops to skirts to dresses to jumpsuits.

This shirt is from Asos.com. The floral pattern, choice of fabric and style of shirt very closely mirror the shirt shown in Rebecca Taylor’s collection above.

This floral, daytime dress is from Forever 21. I like the darker floral pattern; it makes me ready for fall. This dress would also be a great piece to transition from summer to fall because you can wear the dress now with open-toed shoes and in the fall with tights and boots.

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
