Class, elegance, and grace — these three qualities can not only describe your mom, best friend, aunt, sister, cousin or teacher, but also how these women choose to dress themselves to embody these qualities. Fashion is the easiest way to express one’s personality without speaking, which is what makes it so fabulous. You can walk down the street every day and see people in comfy clothes, designer items, hand-sewn purses, or their grandma’s engagement ring, and already know five things about that person without ever even talking to them. With the hardships of oppression, a woman’s ability to express herself is essential, as fashion has become a key to embracing her womanhood. However, we as women couldn’t have gotten here without some of the fashion industry’s most brilliant minds, so here are three of the most iconic women who have shaped the fashion world.

One of the most iconic and notable women in the fashion industry is Coco Chanel. When you think of pearls and fabulous crossed C’s, you think of Chanel. The inventor of the little black dress helped women embrace their femininity in staple pieces but also helped women embrace their masculinity as well. As the creator of the women’s suit, Chanel defied gender roles. Seizing the power that men held in society and trying to balance the playing field by dressing the part, Chanel created a stepping stone in feminism while also looking great doing it.

In today’s day and age, Anna Wintour is easily the most iconic modern-day woman in fashion. Inspiration for The Devil Wears Prada: The current editor of Vogue has served in this position since 1988, easily developing this magazine to reach its fullest potential. Even in the decline of tangible magazines, under Wintour’s guide, there are an estimated 10.8 million physical print readers, not to mention the 12 million online readers as well. Her influence does not stop there, though, as Wintour is the current content officer at Conde West and holds the title of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. This award is given to someone who has made great contributions to the arts and sciences, works with charity and overall is a notable public servant.

Moving on to another royally related excursion, the late Princess Diana of Wales helped decree some of the recurring fashion trends we see today. Her off-duty look in her biker shorts and sweatshirt, which many can see came back in style within the past year, was slightly bold and almost scandalous for the Royal to wear. From comfy to chic, Diana continued to rock the world. The most iconic look is the black off-the-shoulder dress and pearls from the night that Prince Charles admitted to being an unfaithful husband. Every area of her looks has been something to remember.
