Community Blog: Ring in the Holiday Season in Chambana!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Tis the season, collegiettes! Fall Break is officially over, Christmas music is taking over the radio, and everyone is getting in the spirit of the holidays. So, make sure to take a break from studying for finals to celebrate everyone’s favorite season! The Champaign-Urbana area is abounding in holiday-themed activities in the month of December, so check out some of these great events both on campus and off!

Jingle Bell Run/Walk

Work off some of those pounds from all the food you treated yourself to over Fall Break, and contribute to a great cause in Champaign’s Annual Jingle Bell Run/Walk! This 5-kilometer run/walk takes place in Centennial Park, and all the proceeds benefit the Arthritis Foundation. Dress up in a fun holiday costume, or if you get a team together, make sure to all wear something holiday-themed, and run (or walk) to fight Arthritis.  Visit the event’s website for more information and to register

Ice Skating at the Ice Arena

Ice Skating is definitely a must during the winter season. Check out the Ice Arena’s website for times that the rink is open to the public, and go for a skate with a group of friends! Also, if you will still be in the Champaign-Urbana area on December 17th and 18th, the Ice Arena is hosting their Moonlight Skate. Trees, snow, and lights will adorn the ice rink, and make for a very festive holiday event!

Urbana’s Holiday Market

Dress warm, maybe grab some Starbucks coffee, and head over to the Holiday Market in Lincoln Square in Urbana!  From 8:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. every Saturday until December 17th, local vendors will be selling food, arts and crafts, and other exciting items in the famed Lincoln Square. This is a perfect opportunity to find unique and special gifts for family members and friends, and support the local businesses in the community as well!

This is only a sample of the almost endless holiday events and activities that Champaign-Urbana has to offer. Make sure to look at the community websites that will tell you all about everything going on within the next month. Have fun celebrating this wonderful holiday season, fellow collegiettes!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
