Beauty: Seven Beauty Wonders of the Culinary World

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

We all know that beauty comes from within, and these seven foods will help your inner beauty shine through! So put down the Big Mac you just bought, and substitute fast food with these healthy options. They will rejuvenate and replenish your skin with essential antioxidants and vitamins. These foods will also preserve and protect your most important asset from environmental radicals and help cleanse your body from the inside.

1. Blueberries

Considered one of the healthiest foods in the world, blueberries have an abundance of vitamin C and antioxidants. They work to combat toxins in the body, producing soft, radiant skin. Other foods in the berry group, such as strawberries and blackberries, are effective at beautifying skin.

2. Oysters

Oysters contain vitamin B, which keeps hair healthy and shiny. They also contain zinc, a mineral that prevents acne and boosts your immune system. The best part about oysters is that they’re a low-fat source of protein. If you haven’t acquired a taste for oysters, then try some lobster, clams or mussels instead.

3. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a good source of vitamin A, which keep skin hydrated and radiant. The nutrients found in tomatoes aid in the development of skin cells and maintenance of skin cell health. Research also shows that there is a strong correlation between the ingestion of tomatoes and the prevention of cancer. So, the next time you’re making a salad, toss in some tomatoes and eat up!

4. Oranges

If you drink a glass of orange juice every day, try eating an orange instead; it’ll save calories and cut back on sugar. The vitamin C in oranges combats free radicals that can cause premature aging, wrinkles and age spots. Oranges contain powerful antioxidants that can keep you looking young and make your skin glow.

5. Salmon

Salmon contains ingredients that’ll have you squealing with girlish glee. This fish has plenty of omega-3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation, improve skin texture and tone, hydrate your eyes and promote the growth of hair and nails.

6. Walnuts

Eating walnuts is a convenient way for vegans and vegetarians to get their daily intake of protein. Foods that are rich in protein curb your appetite, which prevents overeating or binging. In addition, walnuts are rich in biotin, a B vitamin known for strengthening nails and maintaining healthy skin and hair. Looks like another ingredient to add to your salad!

7. Celery

We are all familiar with the fact that celery contains virtually zero calories and can be used to accommodate diets. Did you also know that chewing celery sticks whitens teeth as well? Celery is composed of fibrous cellulose, which brushes away teeth stains as you chew. Celery boosts your immune system, so it can come to your aid the next time you have a heavy cough or a runny nose.

All seven of these foods can easily be found at your local supermarket or grocery store. If these foods are already in your diet, pat yourself on the back. We are, in fact, what we eat, so we ought to make wise decisions about our diets. These foods will not only make us more beautiful, but will also help us live a longer, healthier life.
