Why Coconut Oil Is Our Greatest Gift

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend clearly has never seen the uses of coconut oil. I am fully convinced that all of the gods from every religion came together to create the gift that is coconut oil. And now I’m here to tell you about all of the great and possibly unknown uses for this incredible blessing.

Cooking

Let’s start with the obvious: a butter substitute. Coconut oil is incredibly healthy for you to consume and is a much better option to grease pans with than butter. You can even buy it in spray form for even more convenience.

Body Scrub

One of the easiest products to make and debatably the most fun to use is a body scrub. It also makes for a perfect gift to your friend that loves to exfoliate. A personal favorite of mine is using coconut oil, sugar and coffee grounds, but any sort of essential oils can be put in place of the coffee grounds to get any scented scrub you desire. Get the full recipe here.

Body Butter

Why spend $15 on a fancy shea body butter with tons of ingredients you can’t pronounce when you can make your own? Plus, you can get your very own personalized scent. By just mixing equal parts shea butter with coconut oil and adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil, you can have your very own natural body butter. Get the full recipe here.

Deodorant

Create your own aluminum-free deodorant right after by using the same ingredients of coconut oil, shea butter, and a few drops of your choice essential oil, but just adding baking soda and arrowroot powder (or corn starch). Get the full recipe here.

Toothpaste

Keep the previous ingredients out to make an all-natural toothpaste with roughly equal parts of baking soda and coconut oil to create a paste to the consistency of your liking. Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil for a more typical minty taste. Get the full here.

Oil Pulling

For this, you only need raw coconut oil. Swish a spoonful around your mouth in the morning for 10 to 15 minutes before brushing your teeth to kill bad breath, whiten teeth, and give you healthier gums.

Makeup Remover Wipes

Coconut oil by itself can work as a makeup remover and even take off your waterproof mascara. But making your own wipes makes it that much more fun. All you need is a mason jar, some cotton rounds, face wash, a few drops of a calm essential oil, and of course, coconut oil. Get the full recipe here.

Hair Mask

You can use coconut oil on its own as a moisturizing hair mask to help split ends and add shine to your locks. Put a good amount all over your hair and let it sit for about 30 minutes before fully washing it out. You can also use smaller amounts to prevent frizzy hair and flyaways.

There are still so many more uses for coconut oil out there in addition to these, so go out,get a huge jar and set a day to make all of your own healthy, natural products. Be sure to keep your coconut oil in a shrine and treat it like the true blessing that it is.
