How to find the perfect swimsuit for YOUR body

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

The exciting part of the pre-summer season is checking out all the new swimsuits for the season. However, it’s important that you are buying the right one. This summer, before you splurge on a sexy new suit, do your research. There are several tips to finding the best suit for your body type.

Decide what looks good on your body type.

There are a few basic body shapes– the pear, hourglass, athletic, tall and petite. Each body type has styles that look best on them. With the dozens of styles out there, there is a suit to suit every body type.

Pear: Try a suit that draws attention to your bust to make you seem less bottom-heavy. When it comes to two-piece suits, go with a print on the top or extra padding to draw the eye there. If you are looking for extra coverage, consider a skirted bottom or a one-piece that has a plunging neckline or a ruffled top.

Hourglass: Try a one-piece suit in a bold color that shows off your curves. Empire waist suits flatter your shape by pulling attention away from the stomach. And if you have a large chest, you can still wear a two-piece suit! In this case try halter tops or tops with wide straps for extra support.

Athletic: Sporty suits or suits with boy shorts are flattering without making you look bottom-heavy.

Tall: To draw attention away from your height, try a suit with an all over pattern, or to accentuate your long legs, try a suit with ties at the hip.

Petite: To make your legs look longer, find a suit that has high-cut thighs. Boy shorts and skirts actually make your legs look shorter, so beware. Avoid patterns that run horizontally and go for V-shaped necklines and vertical patterns to elongate your body and make you appear taller.

Also, you might fit into more than one category, so knowing the categories that your body fits into will be helpful in determining which suits will look great on you. This way you can spend more time at the beach and less in the dressing rooms!

Shop around and know your body shape.
It’s great that we can go online and see hundreds of suits and styles, but the best way to go is to actually go try them on. Go online and narrow your choices down as to what styles you like but make sure to try them on in the stores before you commit to the one. The shipping and returning process takes forever and can be a pain, so why risk it?

Get a deal!
Many stores like Victoria’s Secret have promotions online and in the store. If you spend a certain amount, you get free shipping sometimes. If you go into the store, they have free swim bags or totes with your purchase at certain times. If you are going to spend upwards of fifty dollars on a suit, you might as well get a freebie with it!

Ready, set, shop… and then swim!
