I’m sure by know everyone has heard the name Kamala Harris. If you haven’t, she is the vice- presidential nominee alongside Joe Biden. She spoke for women everywhere when she coined the term “I’m speaking” in the vice-presidential debate last week. Since the election is only days (register to vote, people!!!) away, I think it’s time we learn a little more about our leading lady on the democratic side!

She has made history as the first Black and South Asian woman to be nominated on a major party ticket.

In the crazy and hard times we are living through, it is reassuring to see a woman of color be represented in politics! She has been making historical waves throughout her entire political career, being the second Black woman and first South Asian-American senator in history. No small feat, that’s for sure!

She was raised by immigrant parents.

She was born and raised in California and the daughter of her Indian father and Jamaican mother. Having someone in office who has personal experience with the hardships of immigration will be very helpful and an insightful perspective!

Her name is pronounced COMMA-LA.

I honestly feel like this is the most important fact of them all. People everywhere (including me) have struggled to pronounce her name. Fear not, I have you covered!

She has experience in law enforcement.

Kamala spent two decades serving as both district and attorney general. She has first-hand experience and progressive views! However, she has also received a lot of criticism over this background.

She will fight for LGBTQ, women’s, and people of color’s rights.

She has very progressive views that could potentially move this country forward from the shaky grounds we are currently in. She has always been strong in her beliefs and has been adamant about fighting for everyone’s rights throughout her career.

Kamala Harris has definitely made a splash in the political world, especially recently. I encourage everyone to do their thorough research on all the politicians you will have to vote for in this upcoming election. This election has been a historical one for sure – so make sure you’re registered to vote and head to the polls this election day (or earlier)!
