“To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before Always And Forever” Movie Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

If you’ve been keeping up with “All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” then you would know that we’ve been following Lara Jean through her crazy high school life after her secret love letters from her past got sent out. The last movie to this trio finally surfaced on Netflix on February 12th, and there is definitely a lot that we need to talk about.

The big struggle of this movie is Lara Jean trying to plan what to do with her life. She had a long plan and list of events for her life, but when she doesn’t get into the same school as Peter she feels like her entire life plan is down the drain. We then follow her through her entire senior year and through her hard relationship with her boyfriend.

First we started with Lara Jean on a trip with her family in Korea. It feels like they did this in order to see the type of relationship our main character has with her family and to foreshadow her and Peter’s relationship long distance. We also got some great character development from her father and her father’s fiance.

Now to get to the big issue, the boyfriend drama. Lara Jean and Peter had plans to go to the same college and Lara Jean doesn’t get in. I personally didn’t like how throughout most of the movie the relationship between her and Peter was really distant. Peter couldn’t see past the fact that they could have a long distance relationship and he only thought the worst would happen to their relationship. Lara Jean wanted to go to New York University and Peter is supposed to go to Stanford all the way across the United States. Over the course of the movie the couple had maybe three fights that were never fully solved until the end. All they did was act like nothing’s wrong and try to push down their feelings which I don’t think is the best.

It took almost an entire year of school for Peter and Laura Jean to fix their problems and decide on a way for them to stay together even at a far distance.  I do, however, think the way the movie was wrapped up was a nice way to close the series. They used cute aspects from the first movie and intertwined them to bring their relationship full circle. Not only did they make a second relationship contract like the one they made originally for their fake relationship, they even decided to start writing each other love letters since they would be so far away.

To recap, the movie as a whole is definitely worth watching. However, you’ll have to push through the slow and awkward parts in order to get to the true meaning behind the story. But don’t worry too much, there are plenty of adorable scenes with her family and Peter to get you through the movie unscathed.
