If you are an avid reader, then you must know the name, Haruki Murakami. Haruki Murakami is a Japanese writer who has won multiple literary awards and has his books translated over fifty languages. I read my first Haruki Murakami book last November and instantly became a big fan of his writing. Not only is his work addictive and unique, his unique writing style makes you want to continue reading until the end.

I’ve outlined three reasons why you should be reading Haruki Murakami’s books below.

  1. They are Page Turners

The very first novel I read from Haruki Murakami was 1Q84. Normally, it takes me a while to break into the book and become comfortable with it. I’m sure many of us will agree that the first few chapters sometimes feels as if we’re walking through a a very dry drought. However, and I am not exaggerating when I say this, that from the very first page of the novel, I was absolutely hooked. There is just something so addicting about Murakami’s writing style that it leaves you wanting more and more. Not only is his writing style completely different from other authors, his style of storytelling constantly leaves you into wanting more and more.

2. Realistic Settings

Many of Murakami’s books are based in late 1900’s but they present a very clear and realistic image of Japan that I can quite literally visualize everything. Murakami is the type that go in a lot of detail in regards to the scenery or character. Rather than boring the reader to death, he presents a realistic version of events that you can’t help but imagine it all actually happening. From pointing out the imperfections of the characters to pointing out the societal problems, Murakami is unbelievably accurate with his timeline. Furthermore, he also manages to aline his plot line by subtly mentioning the big events of the world that occurred at the time. Almost all of Murakami’s characters also lead a very humane and realistic life that the reader can easily relate to.

3. Fluidity of the Plot

Anyone who has read any of Murakami’s books will know that despite his unique writing style, Murakami takes all the time in the world to advance into the story. Even though the development of the storyline is good and satisfying, it is also slow. Despite this, however, the flow and fluidity of his storytelling skills are unmatchable. Murakami makes sure to not leave behind any plot holes or any grey areas. Even when the chapters switch between different character’s point of views, you will not feel disconnected or as if the flow of the book has been disrupted.

I strongly recommend anyone who is willing to read Haruki Murakami’s books, especially 1Q84 or Kafka on the Shore. It will definitely be a worthwhile purchase!
