Recently I came across an article slamming Sasha Obama’s choice of college.  The author was very confused as to why she chose to attend the University of Michigan instead of an Ivy League.  After all, her dad was President of the United States; doesn’t that mean she’s rich?  I was really interested in researching this topic because I honestly couldn’t tell you even in a range how much the President of our country is paid.

So, our President is paid $400,000 per year along with $50,000 as an extra expense allowance, $100,000 for a non-taxable travel account, and $19,000 for entertainment.  The salary is taxable but the other benefits aren’t.  Since George Washington stepped into office in 1789, there have been five pay raises for the President, the most recent being in 2001 which doubled the next President, George W. Bush’s, salary.  Presidents and their families are also given $100,000 to redecorate the White House to make themselves feel more at home.

What’s more, after their term is over, former Presidents are still on the government payroll at $200,000 a year but they can ask for more to cover things like office space and staff salaries.  They also receive a vacation budget, unlike an active President because they can’t take vacations.

Interestingly enough, First Ladies aren’t paid at all.  True, they weren’t technically elected and one can argue that their tasks are merely ceremonial.  But First Ladies must accept their title and are still very much expected to perform a diplomatic, political, and involved role in government and society.  President Obama gave this as an example for disparity of equal pay: “…there’s clearly not equal pay in the White House when it comes to her and me.”  The estimated salary of the First Lady (meaning what she should be paid given her duties and activities) is $173,500.

Though the First Lady isn’t paid, she does have a budget for her activities and programs.  Funds are provided to pay for her staff, transportation, and lodging when she’s on official business.  Additionally, the First Lady also receives a lifelong pension, free accommodations, free travel around the world, and a personal security detail.  I suppose we can rest a bit easier knowing that Michelle is well taken care of.
