This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at HWS chapter.

It’s almost impossible to go to a William Smith field hockey game without hearing Hannah Wood’s name announced several times for either goals or assists. Wood has received numerous athletic and academic awards including Liberty League Rookie of the Year, First Team All-Liberty League, and ECAC Mid-Atlantic Rookie for the Week. Read on to find out more about one of William Smith’s most decorated Herons!

Basics:

Name: Hannah Wood

Class Year: 2018

Major: Architecture

Minor: Environmental Studies

Hometown: Sidney, NY

HC: How long have you been playing field hockey?

HW: I’ve been playing since third grade in my youth league. My mom started the youth league at my school. She played DI field hockey at Colgate so she basically brought me up with field hockey, I used to wear my mouth guard and bring my stick to school. Ever since then I’ve been obsessed with it.

HC: Why did you choose to come to HWS?

HW: Sally recruited me, at first I wasn’t thinking about going DIII at all, but when I came to visit I got the feeling that I really loved the school and everything about it. I loved the coaches and fields, they were amazing and I just got a really good vibe on campus. I knew I would have a better experience going DIII than DI.

HC: What’s your favorite memory as a William Smith Heron so far?

HW: Definitely when we beat Rochester in the Liberty League Semi-Finals. We beat them 3-1, I scored 2 goals and one of them was a diving goal, it was just awesome and we were all were freaking out because we lost to them earlier in the season.

HC: What else are you involved in on campus?

HW: I’m in Three Miles Lost and I’m also an Eco Rep. I also have two jobs on campus, I work in the Dean’s Office and at Winn-Seeley Gym.

HC: What is your pregame ritual?

HW: I basically get there 40 minutes before we’re supposed to meet with the team. I get my stuff on and then usually 5 to 10 girls on the team want me to braid their hair. The whole team dances a lot. We do a spin the bottle dance too before we go out.

HC: Any goals you want to accomplish in your next three seasons as a Heron?

HW: I definitely want to win a Liberty League Championship and a National Championship. Those are on the top of my list!

HC: How do you handle the stress of being a student athlete?

HW: I use my planner…it’s like my best friend. I have that on me all the time, it helps me organize everything.
