Top Ten Winter Essentials

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Howard chapter.

Between the bitter winds and the frosty air, it’s very evident that the winter months are among us. It’s important to make sure you have everything to weather the storm. I have compiled a list of my favorite cold weather essentials.

1. Earmuffs – Stylish, convenient, and most importantly: warm. They keep our ears from getting frostbite and they are perfect for natural hairstyles. They spare us from hat hair.

2. Hand Warmers – We have the option of wearing gloves out in the cold but sometimes the cold still makes our fingertips go numb. Hand warmers prevent this.

3. Insulated Mug This is a must have if you are a coffee/tea drinker. Nothing is more disheartening than having a hot beverage to take outside only to have it get cold in a matter of minutes. With an insulated mug your drinks will stay warm for longer periods of time.

4. Carmex Brisk air drys out your skin out and the same goes for your lips. Dry, chapped lips can lead to them cracking. Chapstick or any kind of moisturizer will keep this from happening. So make sure you have some on deck before leaving the house.

5. Oversized sweaters When it’s super cold outside, I don’t put as much effort into my outfits as opposed to the other seasons. My winter go-to is always oversized sweaters and sweatshirts paired with leggings. This can still give a cute, chic look while staying comfortable as you handle your daily tasks.

6. Long socks – There have been multiple occasions where I wore socks that were either too thin or too short and the end result was always the same: ashy ankles and numb toes. So in order to prevent this from happening, invest in a few pairs of long, thick socks. They can add a pop of color to any outfit and your toes will thank you.

7. Ginger Ginger is a must have because with the winter season comes cold and flu season. So to keep your upper respiratory system in check and your sinus clear grab yourself some ginger root from the grocery store. Sprinkle it in your food, add it in a drink, or eat it raw (if you dare).

8. Vitamin C – This classic immune booster can help you fight off a cold during these winter months. Germs are all over the place and incorporating vitamin C into your diet is a great start to building up your immune system. You can eat specific foods (such as oranges) or you can simply buy the powder.

9. Boots Boots will be your best friend when there’s snow on the ground or when it’s just freezing outside. Wear your favorite pair everyday or switch it up.

10. Touch-screen friendly gloves – These gloves are convenient when you have to use your phone. No one wants to take off their gloves to send a quick text. So make room in your closet to add a few pairs.

Suit up, bundle up, and show the winter who’s the boss.

Deni Dedmon is a sophomore speech-language pathology major from Albany, GA. Her first love was writing but her second love was helping others, which led to her choosing a career in speech pathology. When it comes to her writing, she loves to write about everything, from entertainment (she’s an avid Kehlani fan) to book reviews (she’s been reading since the age of one) to controversial topics and current events (ya know, your average angry black girl things). Being the oldest of five girls, she is also passionate about young black girls, their self-esteem, and making sure that they’re proud of being who they are. At the age of seventeen, she became a contributor for MTV Founders and a spring writer for Affinity Magazine.
