In my first year of college I ignored the endless warnings from adults and upperclassmen regarding how quickly money flies out the door when you’re on your own for the first time, and to watch my spending. Last fall I made out pretty well, but it was around this time last year that I started to constantly spend money. By May, I returned home with almost empty pockets. I am very proud of how well I have done so far this year in saving money, and here are some noticeable changes I have made that have helped me in this journey.

The very first thing I cut out this year was Grub Hubbing myself food from off campus. This was easily the biggest factor of what made me spend my money last year– especially in the upcoming cold and dark months, it is extremely tempting to order food rather than walk down the hill to Kimball. The hardest part of this was not ordering food on the weekends after going out with friends. As an alternative to partaking in this, I now go to the lobby shop and get myself snacks at the start of the weekend.

Next up is another gateway money drainer– online shopping. It’s so nice being able to look forward to a package when at school. I have tried to cut out online shopping fully this year, except for the occasional Amazon package. In addition to cutting out online shopping, I have attempted to cut out in-person shopping as well. I now say the occasional no to going to the Blackstone Shops or Target to avoid unnecessary money spending.

Trust those who try to warn you about spending money in college, and happy saving!!
